A New Daily Express Arrives
Indian Railways has recently approved a new daily Express train service connecting Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) with Sawantwadi Road in the southern Konkan region. This service, designated as train numbers 15087 and 15088 for its
round trip, is a significant development for passengers who have long sought more reliable and frequent connectivity. The introduction of this daily service aims to cater to a wide range of travellers, including tourists, students, business people, and daily commuters. Spanning a route of approximately 510 kilometres, the train will have 22 stops at key locations like Dadar, Thane, Panvel, Chiplun, Ratnagiri, and Kankavli, enhancing access to numerous towns in the Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts. While the official launch date and timetable are yet to be announced, its approval signals a strong move to bolster the region's transport infrastructure.
The Speed Gauntlet: How It Stacks Up
The central question for any new service is its speed. While the exact timetable for the new Express is pending, it joins a competitive field. Currently, the fastest options are premium trains like the Tejas Express and Vande Bharat Express, which connect Mumbai to Madgaon (Goa), with stops at Kankavli near Sawantwadi. The Mumbai-Madgaon Vande Bharat, for instance, can reach Kankavali in about 7 to 8 hours. The daily Mao Janshatabdi Express (12051) is another popular and relatively fast choice, taking about 9 hours and 32 minutes to reach Sawantwadi Road. In comparison, other mail/express trains like the Mandovi Express and Konkan Kanya Express typically take between 9.5 to 12 hours for the same journey. The new Express, with its 22 stops, will likely offer a journey time that competes with these standard express services rather than the premium, limited-stop trains.
Train vs. Road: The Full Picture
For many, the alternative to rail is a road trip. Driving from Mumbai to Sawantwadi, a distance of roughly 460-490 kilometres, can take anywhere from 7 to 10 hours, heavily dependent on traffic and road conditions. While a car offers flexibility, the train provides a chance to bypass road congestion, especially during peak holiday seasons. Bus services are also a popular, budget-friendly option, but they are generally the slowest. The average bus journey takes around 14 hours, making it significantly longer than most train services. Therefore, the new daily Express train is poised to be a compelling middle-ground option, offering a balance of cost and time that is more predictable than road travel and more accessible than premium-fare trains.
