A Strategic Push for Indian Tourists
Abu Dhabi is making a significant play for the Indian tourism market, which has consistently been one of its most important international sources. The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) is spearheading a multi-faceted campaign
to shift the perception of the emirate from a brief stopover to a primary holiday destination. This involves not just promotions but also strengthening partnerships with Indian travel agencies and tour operators through roadshows in cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, and Kolkata. The goal is to make it easier for travel professionals to craft compelling and seamless holiday packages for their clients, showcasing the full breadth of what Abu Dhabi has to offer beyond its airport.
The Centrepiece: A Free Visa Offer
The most compelling part of this new drive is a limited-time visa fee waiver. Running from August 1 to October 31, 2026, DCT Abu Dhabi will cover the cost of UAE entry visas for up to 20,000 Indian travellers. This initiative saves each traveller approximately Dh285 ($77), a significant reduction in upfront costs, especially for families and larger groups. However, the offer comes with specific conditions: travellers must hold an Indian passport, book a return flight from India, and stay for a minimum of three consecutive nights in an Abu Dhabi hotel. Crucially, this is not a visa-on-arrival for everyone; the booking must be made through participating travel partners, like Thomas Cook and SOTC, who will handle the visa process.
An Ever-Growing List of Attractions
A key part of Abu Dhabi's pitch is its world-class and ever-expanding roster of attractions that appeal to all ages. Yas Island remains an entertainment powerhouse, home to indoor theme parks like Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, Warner Bros. World™ Abu Dhabi, and the Yas Waterworld water park, making it a perfect family destination regardless of the season. For those seeking cultural enrichment, the Saadiyat Cultural District is a must-visit, featuring the iconic Louvre Abu Dhabi and the grand presidential palace, Qasr Al Watan. The serene Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque continues to be a landmark that draws visitors from all over the world. Future attractions, including a massive Disney theme park slated for Yas Island, promise to keep the city's offerings fresh and exciting for years to come.
Beyond the Theme Parks
Abu Dhabi's appeal extends beyond its modern marvels. The emirate offers a rich tapestry of experiences for those looking to explore nature and heritage. Visitors can kayak through the serene Mangrove National Park, just outside the city centre, to see native wildlife. For a dose of history, the Heritage Village provides a glimpse into traditional Bedouin life. The city's stunning Corniche offers beautiful skyline views and is a popular spot for evening strolls with the family. For foodies, the city boasts a burgeoning culinary scene, from high-end restaurants to authentic local eateries, with a wide variety of Indian cuisine readily available, reflecting the large and vibrant Indian expatriate community that calls Abu Dhabi home.
Improved Connectivity and Accessibility
Making travel easier is a cornerstone of the new strategy. Abu Dhabi enjoys robust air connectivity with India, supported by over 300 weekly flights from various Indian cities. Airlines like Etihad Airways and a new Air India service from Navi Mumbai provide ample options for travellers. This frequent connectivity, combined with the new visa initiative and the efforts to build strong relationships with the Indian travel trade, creates a seamless pathway for holidaymakers. By removing financial and logistical hurdles, Abu Dhabi is positioning itself as not just a desirable destination, but an easy one to choose for that next family vacation or long-weekend getaway.
