The Allure of a Monsoon Beach Trip
There's a unique magic to visiting the sea during the monsoon. The landscape transforms, with lush greenery and dramatic, overcast skies creating a moody and romantic atmosphere. For many Kolkatans, a four-to-five-hour drive is a small price to pay for a break
from city life. The crashing waves, cooler temperatures, and fewer crowds make for a refreshing weekend escape. While some activities might be limited by the rain, the chance to enjoy fresh seafood from a resort balcony or walk along a windswept, empty beach has its own powerful appeal.
Mandarmani: The Energetic Beachfront
Mandarmani is often the go-to for families looking for a more vibrant and accessible beach experience. Its main claim to fame is the 13-kilometre-long shoreline, once famous as one of India's longest motorable beaches. While driving on the beach is now restricted, the area remains bustling with resorts and activity. During the monsoon, the beach takes on a dramatic character with dark clouds and powerful waves, attracting those who enjoy the spectacle. Families can enjoy leisurely strolls, watch the thousands of red crabs that populate the beach, and indulge in fresh seafood from the numerous shacks and restaurants. For those seeking a bit more action, some water sports like jet skiing and banana boat rides may still be available, weather permitting.
Henry's Island: The Tranquil Nature Retreat
In stark contrast to Mandarmani, Henry's Island offers solitude and a deep connection with nature. Located near Bakkhali and about 130-140 km from Kolkata, it is an offbeat choice for those wanting to escape the crowds. This island, which is an extension of the Sundarbans, is managed by the government's fisheries department, which has cultivated a quiet eco-tourism spot with dozens of fish-breeding ponds. The atmosphere here is serene and rustic, with private resorts being banned in favour of government-run guest houses. The journey to the beach itself is an experience, involving a walk through mangrove forests over a charming bamboo bridge. The beach is pristine and quiet, known for its abundance of red crabs and opportunities for bird-watching.
Comparing the Family Experience
The choice between Mandarmani and Henry's Island boils down to a family's travel style. Mandarmani is a commercial tourist destination with a wide range of hotels and restaurants, making it convenient for families who prefer having amenities close at hand. The vibe is lively and social. Henry's Island, on the other hand, is for the family that seeks peace and quiet. Accommodation is limited to basic government cottages, and the focus is on nature-centric activities. You won't find bustling markets or beach parties here; instead, you'll find mangrove trails, watchtowers offering panoramic views, and the quiet hum of nature. It’s a place where children can learn about a unique ecosystem, from the fisheries to the dense Sundari trees.
Travel, Accessibility, and What to Expect
Both destinations are a few hours' drive from Kolkata. The road trip to Mandarmani takes roughly four to five hours. You can reach it by car, bus, or by taking a train to nearby Contai or Digha and hiring a vehicle from there. Getting to Henry's Island involves a similar drive time to the Namkhana area, followed by a ferry crossing to reach Bakkhali, from where the island is a short ride away. During the monsoon, it's wise to check road conditions for both routes. While Mandarmani offers a more straightforward 'drive and arrive' experience, the journey to Henry's Island, with its ferry ride, adds a touch of adventure to the trip.
