Pre-Validate Your Bank Account
This is the single most common reason for refund failures. The Income Tax Department now issues all refunds electronically to a pre-validated bank account linked with your PAN. If your account isn't validated, is closed, or has an incorrect IFSC code,
the refund will fail. Before filing, log in to the e-filing portal, go to 'My Profile', and select 'My Bank Account'. Add your desired account and ensure its status shows as 'Validated'. This simple check ensures the path is clear for your refund to be credited without any hitches. It's also critical that your name in the bank account matches the name on your PAN card.
Match Your Income with Form 26AS and AIS
The tax department has a comprehensive view of your finances through Form 26AS (your tax credit statement) and the Annual Information Statement (AIS), which lists various financial transactions. A mismatch between the income you declare and the data in these forms is a major red flag that can halt your refund for manual verification. Before filing, download both documents from the e-filing portal. Reconcile your salary, interest income, dividend payments, and any other earnings with what's reported. If you find discrepancies in the AIS, such as incorrect or duplicate entries, use the online feedback facility to correct them before proceeding.
Choose the Correct ITR Form
The Income Tax Act prescribes different ITR forms for different categories of taxpayers and income types. For example, ITR-1 (Sahaj) is for resident individuals with a total income up to ₹50 lakh from salary, one house property, and other sources like interest. If you have capital gains from selling shares or property, you would need to file ITR-2. Filing the wrong form is a fundamental error that will lead to your return being classified as 'defective', stopping the refund process entirely until you file a corrected return.
Ensure Personal Details Are Accurate
It may seem basic, but small errors in your personal information can cause significant delays. Double-check your PAN, Aadhaar number, date of birth, and contact details like your email address and mobile number. An incorrect PAN or a name that doesn't exactly match your PAN records can cause validation failures. An outdated mobile number or email address means you might miss important communications from the tax department regarding your return, leading to delays in responding to any queries they might have.
E-Verify Your Return Immediately
Filing your return is only half the job done; it is not considered valid until it is verified. The law requires you to verify your ITR within 30 days of filing. If you miss this deadline, your ITR is treated as invalid, meaning the refund process will not even begin. The fastest method is e-verification through Aadhaar OTP, which takes only a few minutes. Other options include using net banking or an Electronic Verification Code (EVC) from your bank or Demat account. Verifying your return as soon as you file it is the final and most crucial step to get it into the processing queue quickly.
