A New Era for Saudi Tourism
Not long ago, visiting Saudi Arabia for leisure was a complex undertaking. Today, the Kingdom is in the midst of a dramatic transformation under its Vision 2030 plan, which aims to diversify the economy away from oil. Tourism is a central pillar of this
strategy, with ambitious goals to attract 150 million visitors annually by 2030. This has led to a series of reforms designed to make the country more accessible than ever, from launching a tourist e-visa in 2019 to developing giga-projects like the Red Sea resorts and the entertainment city of Qiddiya. The latest of these traveler-friendly initiatives is the Package Visa, a pilot program designed to eliminate common travel hassles.
What is the Package Visa?
The Package Visa is a digital service that integrates the tourist visa application directly into a travel booking. Instead of applying for a visa, booking flights, and finding accommodation in separate, time-consuming steps, eligible travelers can now do it all at once through an authorized travel provider. The process is entirely digital: travelers select a pre-approved package, complete the payment, and receive their visa, insurance, and all travel documents via email, sometimes within 48 hours. This initiative significantly reduces paperwork and streamlines the entire journey from planning to arrival.
Who is Eligible and What are the Rules?
The Package Visa is currently in a pilot phase and available to travelers from a select group of countries, including India, Pakistan, Egypt, Jordan, Indonesia, Bangladesh, and Mexico. The program is expected to expand to more nationalities in the future. To qualify, a package must include a confirmed round-trip flight and a stay at a Ministry of Tourism-licensed hotel rated four stars or higher. The visa itself is a single-entry permit valid for three months, allowing for a stay of between two and 88 days. It is important to note that the visa is tied to the package; if the trip is cancelled, the visa is automatically revoked.
The Benefits for Short-Haul Travelers
For travelers from India and other nearby countries, the Package Visa presents a compelling option for short-haul trips, weekend getaways, and exploring a new destination without a major logistical headache. The all-in-one process removes the uncertainty and administrative burden often associated with first-time visits. Travelers can easily book a weekend trip to explore the modern architecture of Riyadh, the historic districts of Jeddah, or the stunning ancient landscapes of AlUla. While the package visa does not facilitate Hajj pilgrimage, visa holders are permitted to travel to the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah after arriving in the Kingdom. The system also allows travelers to add optional tours, event tickets, and local experiences to their package, creating a complete itinerary with a single booking.
How It Compares to Other Visa Options
Saudi Arabia has introduced several visa types in recent years, including a standard tourist e-visa, visa-on-arrival for eligible nationalities, and a free Stopover Transit Visa that allows a stay of up to 96 hours. The standard e-visa offers more flexibility for travelers who prefer to book their own flights and accommodation. However, the Package Visa is specifically designed for those who value convenience and simplicity. By bundling the core components of a trip, it offers peace of mind and significantly lowers the barrier to entry, especially for those unfamiliar with the country or the visa application process.
