The Bottleneck of the Past
For nearly four decades, the Passenger Reservation System (PRS) has been the digital heart of Indian Railways. Introduced in 1986 to replace manual registers, it evolved to handle the surge of online bookings, which now account for nearly 89% of all reserved
tickets. However, the system has been creaking under the strain. At its previous peak, it could process around 4 lakh passenger enquiries and handle about 32,000 ticket bookings per minute. This capacity was no match for the massive spikes in traffic during festival seasons or the daily Tatkal window, leading to frequent crashes and a frustrating experience for millions of users.
A Quantum Leap in Capability
The new-generation PRS, developed by the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS), represents a monumental upgrade. The system is being engineered to handle more than 40 lakh enquiries per minute—a tenfold increase from its previous capacity. This means everything from checking seat availability and PNR status to fare enquiries will become significantly faster and more reliable, even during peak hours. The goal is to create a system that doesn't just cope with demand, but stays several steps ahead of it, ensuring a smoother experience for everyone.
Boosting Bookings, Not Just Enquiries
While faster enquiries are a major improvement, the real game-changer is the increase in booking capacity. The upgraded cloud-based platform is designed to process over 1.5 lakh ticket bookings per minute. This is nearly a fivefold increase from the previous limit of 32,000 tickets. For passengers, this directly translates to a much higher chance of successfully securing a ticket during high-demand periods. The frantic, blink-and-you-miss-it nature of Tatkal bookings is expected to become less stressful, as the system will be far more capable of handling the simultaneous rush of thousands of users.
How Is This Possible?
This massive jump in performance is the result of a fundamental shift in technology. Indian Railways is moving from its older, server-based infrastructure to a modern, cloud-enabled platform. Cloud architecture provides greater scalability and flexibility, allowing the system to dynamically allocate resources to handle sudden surges in traffic without buckling. Developed by CRIS, this next-generation system is designed to be more resilient and reliable. The migration is being done in a phased manner to ensure stability and minimise any disruption to the millions of passengers who rely on the service around the clock.
