An Invitation to the South Pole
During an early August 2026 meeting in Bengaluru, NASA formally invited the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to participate in building a permanent lunar outpost. This invitation was extended during the ninth India-U.S. Civil Space Joint Working
Group, a forum established in 2005 to foster bilateral cooperation. The proposed base will be located near the Moon's south pole, a strategic region believed to hold significant deposits of water ice in its permanently shadowed craters. This isn't just a friendly offer; it’s a strategic move to deepen the partnership established when India signed the NASA-led Artemis Accords in 2023, a set of principles for peaceful and responsible space exploration.
What India Brings to the Partnership
NASA's invitation is a clear acknowledgment of India’s soaring capabilities as a major space power. ISRO has a proven track record of cost-effective and successful deep-space missions. Its historic Chandrayaan-3 mission in 2023 made India the first nation to successfully soft-land a spacecraft near the lunar south pole. This expertise is invaluable to NASA's plans. Furthermore, India is already developing ambitious future missions, including Chandrayaan-4, which aims to collect lunar samples and return them to Earth, a complex undertaking that demonstrates capabilities crucial for building and sustaining a lunar base. By collaborating, NASA gains a skilled partner with firsthand experience in the very region it wants to develop, potentially accelerating its timeline and sharing the enormous financial and technological burden.
NASA's Strategic Calculation
For the United States, this partnership is about more than just science. It’s a key part of a broader geopolitical strategy. As NASA plans to establish a sustained human presence on the Moon, it is in a clear-eyed competition with a rival bloc led by China and Russia, who are collaborating on their own International Lunar Research Station (ILRS). Inviting India, the world's largest democracy and a rising technological power, into the Artemis fold strengthens the U.S.-led alliance. NASA's messaging has been direct: "We're going back to the moon to stay — and we're bringing our partners with us." This collaborative approach aims to establish shared norms and technological standards for space exploration, effectively creating a democratic-led counterweight to Chinese and Russian ambitions. The partnership also builds on previous successful joint projects like the NISAR Earth-observation satellite, which launched in 2025.
A Shared Future in the Final Frontier
While the exact details of India's contribution to the Moon Base are still under discussion, the collaboration is a win-win. For India, it offers access to cutting-edge technologies and a seat at the table in defining humanity's future in space. It aligns with ISRO's own long-term goals, which include sending an Indian astronaut to the Moon by 2040 and establishing its own space station by 2035. For NASA, it diversifies and strengthens the Artemis coalition, making its vision for a permanent lunar presence more robust and resilient.
