The End of an Era: What is a UK eVisa?
The United Kingdom is phasing out physical visa documents, such as Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs) and vignette stickers in passports. In their place, the UK has rolled out a fully digital system known as the eVisa. An eVisa is not a document you print
at home; it is a secure, online record of your immigration status held in the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) database. For travellers from India, this means that upon a successful visa application, you will receive access to a UKVI account where your permission to travel, enter, and stay in the UK is stored electronically. This shift is part of a broader government strategy to modernise the UK border, aiming for a more streamlined and secure process.
How It Affects Indian Travellers
It is important to clarify that this change does not alter the requirement for Indian citizens to apply for a visa before travelling to the UK. Indian passport holders are not eligible for the UK's Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) scheme, which is designed for nationalities that do not require a visa for short stays. The core change for Indian travellers is in how that visa is issued and proven. Instead of a sticker, your visa will be a digital record linked to your passport. Before you fly, airlines will verify your status electronically. If the details in the system do not perfectly match your passport, you could be denied boarding.
Your Phone is Your Proof
Under the new system, your primary tool for proving your immigration status is your UKVI account, accessible via a smartphone or other device. This isn't just for entering the country. Once in the UK, you will need to prove your status to do things like rent a flat or prove your right to work. This is done by generating a 'share code' from your UKVI account, which you then give to a landlord or employer. This code allows them to view a limited, official confirmation of your rights online. This makes keeping your account details, especially your current passport information, completely up-to-date an absolute necessity.
The Pitfalls of a Digital-Only World
The transition to a digital-only system comes with potential risks. The most obvious is an over-reliance on technology. A lost phone, a dead battery, or a lack of internet access at a critical moment could create serious issues. Furthermore, reports have highlighted technical glitches, system outages, and difficulties for some users in accessing their accounts or correcting errors. This can lead to significant stress, with individuals facing delays, missed flights, or trouble accessing essential services because they cannot prove their status on demand. Third parties like airline staff or landlords may also be unfamiliar with the new system, leading to confusion and delays.
How to Prepare and Protect Yourself
Given the reliance on digital records, preparation is key. First, ensure you create your UKVI account as instructed after your visa is granted and check that all details are correct before you travel. Always travel with the same passport that is linked to your eVisa account. If you get a new passport, you must update your UKVI account immediately. As a backup, it is wise to carry a printout of your visa decision letter and a screenshot of your eVisa status page. While the official system is digital, these can be helpful in case of a dispute or technical problem. Finally, always travel with a fully charged phone and a portable power bank. Do not let a dead battery jeopardise your entry into the UK.
