different stages of sleep: lighter non-REM (NREM) sleep and the deeper, restorative stages, including slow-wave deep sleep and REM sleep, where most dreaming occurs. Each stage plays a vital role. Your body is simply less efficient at processing food at night; insulin sensitivity declines as the day progresses, meaning the same meal eaten at 9 p.m. will cause a larger blood sugar spike than if it were eaten at 2 p.m. Aligning your meals with daylight hours helps keep all your internal clocks synchronised, promoting better metabolic health and setting the stage for better sleep.

Shifting your largest meal of the day to the early afternoon—and keeping your evening meal lighter and simpler—allows your body to work with its natural rhythms, not against them. By finishing your main digestive work hours before you go to bed, you give your body a chance to fully wind down. This can lead to a more stable core body temperature, reduced risk of acid reflux, and more stable blood sugar levels throughout the night. When your body isn't preoccupied with heavy digestion, it can more easily transition into the deeper, more restorative stages of sleep. This means you're not just sleeping; you're preserving your sleep architecture, spending more time in the crucial deep and REM stages that are vital for physical and mental recovery. Making the Practical Shift
The idea of making lunch your main meal might seem like a big change, especially given work schedules and social customs. However, it doesn't have to be an all-or-nothing approach. Start by aiming to finish your last meal at least two to three hours before you plan to sleep. If your schedule permits, try making your midday meal more substantial and your evening meal smaller and easier to digest. Focus on lean proteins and complex carbohydrates for your evening meal, and avoid heavy, greasy, or overly spicy foods. Even small adjustments can make a difference. Pay attention to how you feel. Many people who adopt this pattern report not only better sleep but also more stable energy levels during the day.
