For decades, Indira Gandhi International (IGI) has been the default choice. Now, with Noida International Airport (DXN) operational since June 2026, the equation has changed. A common mistake is to simply check which airport is geographically closer.
A flyer in Noida, for example, might be 60 km from Jewar but only 30-35 km from IGI. However, the travel time to IGI through congested city roads could be similar to the smoother, signal-free drive to Jewar via the Yamuna Expressway. The opposite is true for someone in Gurugram, for whom IGI is the clear winner on both distance and time. The real calculation involves traffic, time of day, and mode of transport.
Calculating Your Total Travel Time
Your “door-to-door” journey begins the moment you lock your home. For residents of Noida, Greater Noida, and the Yamuna Expressway corridor, DXN is a significant time-saver. A trip from Pari Chowk in Greater Noida to Jewar can take as little as 35-40 minutes, while the same journey to IGI could take over 90 minutes during peak hours. Conversely, for anyone in West Delhi, South Delhi, or Gurugram, IGI remains far more accessible. A trip from Gurugram's Cyber City to IGI might take 30 minutes, whereas the journey to Jewar could stretch beyond two hours. Flyers in Ghaziabad face a tougher choice, where the specific location determines the better option, making a real-time map check essential before every trip.
The True Cost of Your Journey
A cheaper flight ticket from one airport can easily be offset by higher ground transportation costs. Reaching Jewar from most parts of Delhi and Gurugram means a longer, more expensive cab ride, potentially costing between ₹2,000 and ₹4,000. Additionally, using the Yamuna Expressway involves a one-way toll of around ₹140-₹160 for a car, though FASTag is mandatory and simplifies payment. In contrast, reaching IGI is often cheaper via cab and is extensively covered by the Delhi Metro, including the high-speed Airport Express Line, offering a fast and economical option. It is also crucial to factor in the User Development Fee (UDF), which is part of your ticket cost. DXN's initial UDF is higher at ₹490 compared to IGI's ₹129, a difference that adds up, especially for family travel.
Connectivity: The Present and The Future
IGI’s biggest advantage is its mature, multi-modal connectivity. The Delhi Metro's Airport Express and Magenta Line provide seamless access from across the NCR. Jewar, being a new airport, is currently reliant on road transport. The primary access is the Yamuna Expressway, with a network of UPSRTC and Haryana Roadways buses also providing service. However, massive infrastructure upgrades are underway. A dedicated spur from the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway is set to reduce travel time from Faridabad and Gurugram. Furthermore, two major rail projects are planned: the Ghaziabad-Jewar Namo Bharat (RRTS) corridor and a station for the Delhi-Varanasi bullet train. The RRTS, currently in the Detailed Project Report stage, aims to cut travel time from Ghaziabad to Jewar to under 50 minutes. These future links will eventually put DXN on par with IGI for public transport access.
Making Your Personalised Choice
So, which airport should you choose? There is no single answer. The decision is highly personal and depends on your starting location, time of travel, budget, and tolerance for traffic. For residents in and around Noida and Greater Noida, Jewar is a game-changer. For those in Gurugram, Dwarka, and most of Delhi, IGI will likely remain the more practical option for the near future. At launch, DXN is served by a limited number of domestic flights from airlines like IndiGo and Akasa Air, with international routes planned for later.
