Over the past few years, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), the country's technical education regulator, has been overseeing a significant consolidation. This involves a moratorium on building new engineering colleges in most areas
and the progressive closure of hundreds of existing institutions and courses. Progressive closure allows existing students to complete their degrees but stops new admissions, preventing the disruption of mass transfers. In the 2025-26 academic year alone, 58 technical colleges were approved for such closures, and over 950 courses were discontinued. This isn't a sudden development but the result of a policy shift that has been years in the making, aimed at addressing a crisis of quality that has long plagued Indian technical education.
A Focus on Quality Over Quantity
The primary driver for this consolidation is a stark mismatch between the number of graduates and their employability. For years, India saw a boom in the establishment of private engineering colleges. However, this rapid expansion often came at the cost of quality. Many institutions suffered from poor infrastructure, a shortage of qualified faculty, and outdated curricula. As a result, a significant percentage of India's 1.5 million annual engineering graduates were deemed unemployable in their core fields. Studies have repeatedly shown a wide gap between what students learn and the practical skills demanded by the industry. With chronically low admission rates—some colleges struggled to fill 30% of their seats—many institutions became financially unviable. The AICTE's consolidation is a direct response to this reality, aiming to weed out underperforming institutions and focus resources on those that can deliver quality education.
The 'High-Demand' Paradox

Shifting Focus to Emerging and Core Fields
This consolidation phase isn't just about closures; it's also about redirection. While shutting down failing programs, AICTE is actively encouraging institutions to introduce courses in new and emerging areas like Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning, Data Science, and Cybersecurity. This is a strategic push to align the education system with the future of industry. At the same time, there's a growing concern about the decline of core engineering branches like Mechanical, Civil, and Electrical engineering. Top educators have warned that an exclusive focus on computer science could harm India's long-term industrial and infrastructural capabilities. As part of the new policy, AICTE is encouraging multidisciplinary approaches, such as integrating AI with core engineering, to revive these foundational branches and make them more appealing to a new generation of students.

For students and their families, this period of transition can be confusing. On one hand, the closure of colleges and reduction of seats might appear to limit options and increase competition.
