A New Era of Connectivity
The Railway Board has officially approved the introduction of the Surat-Udaipur Vande Bharat Express, a move celebrated as a significant infrastructure boost for both states. Operated by the Western Railway, this will be Surat's first Vande Bharat train
to originate and terminate from the city, fulfilling a long-standing demand. The service is poised to transform travel by offering a faster, safer, and more convenient option for passengers. In a related decision, the existing Udaipur City-Asarva Vande Bharat Express will be discontinued, with this new, extended route effectively taking its place and enhancing the connection deep into South Gujarat. The launch is anticipated to happen before the Navratri festival in October 2026 to cater to the festive travel rush.
Route, Stoppages, and Schedule
The train, numbered 26903 from Surat and 26904 from Udaipur, will cover a distance of approximately 690 kilometres. It is scheduled to run six days a week, with no service on Tuesdays. The proposed schedule is designed for convenience: the train will depart from Surat at 6:10 AM and arrive in Udaipur at 1:40 PM. For the return journey, it will leave Udaipur at 3:35 PM and reach Surat at 11:00 PM. The train will make nine key stops along its route: Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Maninagar, Asarva (Ahmedabad), Himmatnagar, Shamlaji Road, Dungarpur, and Zawar. This extensive list of halts ensures that multiple towns and cities across both states gain direct access to this premium service.
Slashing Travel Time
The most significant advantage of the new Vande Bharat Express is the drastic reduction in travel time. The journey between Surat and Udaipur will be completed in approximately 7 hours and 30 minutes. This is a substantial improvement compared to the current travel options. By road, the same journey typically takes eight to nine hours, depending on traffic conditions and the number of stops. Existing train services take considerably longer. The introduction of this semi-high-speed train, which can reach a maximum speed of 160 kmph, marks a new benchmark for rail travel on this popular corridor. The service will operate with an 8-car coach composition, providing a modern and efficient travel experience.
A Boost for Tourism and Trade
This new train service is expected to be a powerful catalyst for economic growth, tourism, and social ties between the two regions. It directly connects Surat, known globally as a hub for diamonds and textiles, with Udaipur, the 'City of Lakes,' a world-renowned tourist destination famous for its palaces, lakes, and cultural heritage. The improved connectivity will make it easier for business travelers from Surat to access markets in southern Rajasthan, while simultaneously encouraging more tourists from Gujarat to visit Udaipur and its surrounding areas. The service is expected to be particularly popular for weekend getaways and among those planning destination weddings in Rajasthan.
The Vande Bharat Experience
The Vande Bharat Express is synonymous with modern comfort and advanced features. Passengers can expect an aircraft-like experience with sleek interiors, reclining ergonomic seats, and large windows for panoramic views. The trains are equipped with automatic doors, on-board Wi-Fi for infotainment, mobile charging sockets for every seat, and a GPS-based passenger information system. Safety is a top priority, with features like the KAVACH anti-collision system, CCTV cameras in all coaches, and an aerosol-based fire detection and suppression system. The coaches also feature vacuum bio-toilets and touch-free amenities, ensuring a clean and hygienic journey. Executive class coaches offer the added luxury of 360-degree rotating seats.
