The quintessential Indian festive season, once a whirlwind of spontaneous shopping, is undergoing a quiet but significant transformation. A new era of deliberate, planned purchasing is taking root in households across the country.
A Shift in the Festive Mindset
For years, festive shopping
in India was synonymous with indulgence and spur-of-the-moment buys. It was a time to loosen the purse strings. However, a different pattern is now emerging. While spending continues, it is becoming more intentional. According to a LocalCircles survey, total urban festive spending is projected to see a slight decline in 2026. Instead of abandoning shopping, consumers are making more considered choices. This shift isn't about austerity but about a move towards smarter, value-driven decisions, even as a significant number of consumers, particularly Gen Z, still increase their spending during festivals.
The Economic Pressure Cooker
One of the primary drivers of this change is the challenging economic environment. Rising inflation is putting a squeeze on household budgets, forcing families to prioritize necessities. With retail inflation reaching a near two-year high of 5.54% in September 2026, driven largely by food prices, there is less room for non-essential spending. The Reserve Bank of India has responded by increasing the repo rate to 5.50%, making loans more expensive and further dampening consumer sentiment. This economic reality means that even when people want to spend, they are more likely to plan for it, with one survey finding 83% of households planning to use savings to fund at least part of their festive purchases.
The Rise of the Value-Conscious Shopper
The modern Indian consumer is no longer just price-sensitive; they have become price-value conscious. Thanks to increased exposure to global brands and a wealth of information online, shoppers are now asking what they get for their money in terms of quality, design, and durability. This shift is evident in the willingness to spend more on a product if it offers demonstrably better value. It's a move away from accumulating things towards acquiring items that are reliable and worthwhile. Even as shoppers are cautious, they are spending with sharp focus, planning to increase spending in fewer categories. Apparel and footwear remain a top priority for many, but the spending is more discerning.
A New Generation Leads the Charge
Younger consumers, particularly Millennials and Gen Z, are at the forefront of this trend. While reports show a majority of Gen Z consumers do increase their spending during festivals, their approach is a blend of planning and spontaneity. They are digitally savvy, using online platforms for discovery and price comparison. This generation is also characterized by a growing interest in financial literacy. There is a clear understanding that impulsive spending can have longterm consequences, a lesson reinforced by the economic uncertainties of recent years. This has led to a proactive approach to managing money, even during times of celebration.
Technology as a Budgeting Ally
The widespread availability of smartphones and fintech innovations has made calculated spending easier than ever. A new generation of budgeting apps designed for the Indian market is helping millions take control of their finances. Apps like INDMoney, Fi Money, and Monefy allow users to track expenses automatically by reading bank and UPI transaction alerts, categorise spending, and set monthly limits. These tools provide a clear, datadriven picture of where money is going, turning abstract financial goals into tangible, daily habits. This technology empowers users to see the impact of their spending in realtime, making it easier to stick to a festive budget without feeling deprived.
