The Rise of the ‘Paw-cation’
The bond between Indians and their pets has never been stronger. This growing sentiment of ‘pet humanisation,’ where furry companions are seen as integral family members, is reshaping industries, and travel is no exception. Data shows that pet-friendly
accommodation is one of the most used search filters on travel booking sites, with millions of searches globally. For Indian travellers, this has translated into a new mindset where holidays are planned not just for people, but for pets too. This shift is fuelling a boom in demand for services that cater to the whole family, paws and all.
Friendlier Skies: What’s New with Airlines?
Air travel has historically been one of the biggest hurdles for pet owners. Thankfully, several Indian airlines are updating their policies. The most significant change is the increased acceptance of small pets in the aircraft cabin. Airlines like Air India and Akasa Air now permit pets (usually dogs and cats) to fly in the cabin on many domestic routes, provided they meet specific weight and carrier size requirements. Typically, a pet weighing up to 10 kg, including its soft carrier, can be tucked safely under the seat in front of you. For larger animals, the process for travelling in the temperature-controlled cargo hold has also become more streamlined, though it’s crucial to book well in advance as there are limits on the number of pets allowed per flight.
Paws and Paperwork: Preparing for Your Flight
While policies are more welcoming, preparation is key. Flying with a pet requires specific documentation. You will need a recent fitness-to-fly certificate from a registered veterinarian, along with up-to-date vaccination records, especially for rabies. Airlines require you to book your pet’s spot at least 48 hours in advance, as they need to verify documents and confirm space. The carrier itself is also critical; for in-cabin travel, it must be a soft, well-ventilated bag that fits under the seat. Always check your specific airline’s exact dimension requirements before you buy a carrier or your ticket.
Hotels Roll Out the Welcome Mat
The hospitality sector is leading the charge in welcoming four-legged guests. Across India, major hotel chains and boutique properties are no longer just ‘pet-tolerant’ but actively ‘pet-welcoming’. Brands like IHCL SeleQtions, ITC Hotels, and Tree of Life Resorts have launched dedicated programmes like ‘Pawcations’ and ‘Petcaytions’. These often go beyond just allowing a pet in the room. Many properties now offer special amenities such as pet beds, dedicated food and water bowls, and even curated pet menus. Some resorts in destinations like Goa, Lonavala, and Jaipur provide large open spaces, designated play areas, and pet-sitting services, ensuring both you and your companion have a relaxing stay.
Beyond the Room: A Full Holiday Experience
The trend extends beyond just a place to sleep. Indian travellers are now planning entire itineraries around their pets. Recent data shows a strong preference for activities that can be shared, such as visiting pet-friendly cafes and restaurants, exploring dog-friendly beaches, or going on nature hikes. This indicates that travellers aren't just bringing their pets along; they are seeking shared experiences. In response, destinations are becoming more accommodating, with entire ecosystems of pet-friendly services emerging in popular tourist spots. While flying is becoming easier, road trips remain the most popular choice for Indian pet owners, with 93% favouring the flexibility and spontaneity of travel by car.
