Step 1: Decode the Weather Forecast
First, go beyond a simple rain icon on your app. Look for specifics about intensity and duration. Is it a steady drizzle or a torrential downpour expected for hours? Check official sources like the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for alerts. They
use a colour-coded system: a 'Yellow' alert advises you to be aware, 'Orange' means be prepared for potentially disruptive weather, and 'Red' is a warning to take action, as severe conditions are expected. These alerts can indicate risks of flash floods, which develop rapidly from heavy rain, and are far more dangerous than gradual areal flooding. If a 'Red' or 'Orange' alert is issued for your route or destination, it's a strong signal to reconsider your travel plans.
Step 2: Analyse Your Route
Not all roads are equal in a downpour. Before you leave, analyse your intended path. Is it a well-maintained national highway or a rural backroad? Hilly and mountainous areas pose a significant risk of landslides and falling rocks, especially during monsoons. Heavy rain saturates the soil, which can cause slopes to fail. Look for news of road closures or advisories from local authorities. In urban areas, identify low-lying spots, underpasses, and areas known for waterlogging. A route that’s perfectly safe in dry weather can become a dangerous trap when flooded. Having an alternative route planned is smart, but if the entire region is affected, staying put is the safest option.
Step 3: Evaluate Your Vehicle's Condition
Your car is your primary safety tool, so ensure it’s ready for the challenge. Check your tyres for adequate tread depth and correct pressure; good tyres are crucial for maintaining grip on wet surfaces and preventing hydroplaning. Also, test your headlights, brake lights, and indicators. Visibility is severely reduced in heavy rain, and you need to see and be seen. Finally, ensure your wiper blades are in good condition and can clear your windshield effectively. If your car isn't in top shape, the added stress of a rainy drive significantly increases the risk of a breakdown or an accident.
Step 4: Understand the Danger of Water on Roads
It is incredibly difficult to judge the depth of standing or flowing water. A common safety rule is to never attempt to drive through water that is moving or is deeper than 10cm (about 4 inches). As little as six inches of water can reach the bottom of most passenger cars, leading to a loss of control or a stalled engine. One foot of water is enough to make many vehicles float, and two feet of rushing water can sweep away even SUVs and trucks. Driving into floodwater is the cause of most flood-related drownings. The water can also hide deep potholes or even areas where the road has been completely washed away. The universal advice from safety experts is simple: Turn Around, Don't Drown.
Step 5: Make the Final Call
If you decide to proceed, stay vigilant. Poor visibility is as dangerous as flooding. If the rain becomes so intense that you cannot clearly see the vehicle ahead of you, pull over to a safe location and wait for conditions to improve. On the road, look for real-time warning signs: debris on the road, tilted trees or poles, or other vehicles stalled in water. Listen for rumbling sounds in hilly areas, which could indicate an approaching landslide. Remember to slow down, increase your following distance, and never use cruise control on wet roads. If at any point you feel unsure or the situation appears to be worsening, find a safe place to stop. No weekend trip is worth risking your safety.
