This amount was associated with a 13% lower risk of death from any cause compared to those who did no strength training. Interestingly, the benefits appeared to plateau after this point; doing more than 120 minutes of strength work per week did not show any additional reduction in mortality risk. This suggests that consistency within a moderate range is more important than spending countless hours in the gym.

The Powerful Combination with Cardio
While strength training on its own proved beneficial, the study confirmed that the most powerful combination for a longer life is mixing it with aerobic exercise. Participants who met recommendations for aerobic activity (like brisk walking, running, or cycling) and also performed 90 to 119 minutes of strength training had a staggering 45% lower risk of dying during the study period compared to inactive individuals. This underscores that the two types of exercise are not interchangeable but complementary. Cardio strengthens the heart and lungs, while strength training protects your muscles, bones, and metabolic health, creating a comprehensive shield against age-related decline.
