Why Humidity Is a Plant's Unseen Friend (or Foe)
Humidity, or the amount of water vapour in the air, plays a crucial role in a plant's ability to 'breathe'. Plants release water vapour through tiny pores on their leaves in a process called transpiration. This process helps pull water up from the roots,
delivering essential nutrients throughout the plant. When the air is very dry (low humidity), transpiration speeds up, causing the plant to lose moisture faster than its roots can absorb it. Conversely, when the air is saturated with moisture (high humidity), transpiration slows down significantly. This slowdown can be problematic, as it reduces the plant's ability to draw up new water and nutrients from the soil. Most common houseplants are comfortable in a humidity range of 40-60%.
Monsoon Mayhem: The Problem with High Humidity
In India, the monsoon season brings a dramatic spike in humidity. While the rain is a relief from summer heat, the constantly damp air can spell trouble for indoor plants. With high ambient moisture, the soil stays wet for much longer because evaporation is slow. This creates a perfect storm for the number one killer of houseplants: root rot. When roots are waterlogged, they can't get the oxygen they need and begin to decay, leading to yellowing leaves, mushy stems, and an unpleasant smell from the pot. Furthermore, these warm, wet conditions are an ideal breeding ground for fungal diseases like powdery mildew and pests such as fungus gnats.
Care Tips for High-Humidity Seasons
To keep your plants healthy during the monsoon, focus on reducing excess moisture. First, cut back on watering. Ditch your regular schedule and instead, check the soil by inserting your finger an inch deep; only water if it feels dry. Ensure your pots have excellent drainage holes to let excess water escape. Improving air circulation is also key. Avoid crowding plants together and, if possible, use a fan to keep air moving, which helps dry the leaf surfaces and prevent fungal growth. Be vigilant about removing any dead or fallen leaves, as they can harbour pests and diseases.
The Dry Spell: Low Humidity in Winter and AC Rooms
Just as high humidity poses challenges, low humidity is equally stressful for plants. This is a common issue during dry winters or in homes that use air conditioning, as both heating and cooling systems strip moisture from the air. In dry air, plants lose water rapidly through their leaves. You'll often see the tell-tale signs: brown, crispy leaf tips and edges, curling or wrinkled leaves, and slow or stunted growth. Plants under this kind of stress are also more susceptible to pests like spider mites, which thrive in dry conditions.
How to Boost Humidity for Thirsty Plants
If your home is dry, there are several simple ways to create a more humid microclimate for your plants. Grouping plants together is an easy first step, as they naturally release moisture through transpiration. Another popular method is using a pebble tray: place your pot on a shallow tray filled with pebbles and water. The evaporating water will increase humidity right around the plant, but ensure the pot sits on the pebbles, not in the water, to prevent root rot. For a more significant and consistent boost, especially for humidity-loving tropicals like ferns and Calatheas, investing in a small room humidifier is the most effective solution.
