The Search for 'Smarter' Travel
For decades, a trip to Europe was the ultimate travel goal for many Indians. But a shift is underway. Today’s travellers are more discerning, driven by a desire for experiences that are not only memorable but also practical. This new approach prioritises
a few key factors: budget-friendliness, convenient visa policies, and the promise of unique cultural immersion. The modern Indian tourist is looking for affordability without compromising on the quality of the experience. This has led to a boom in interest for destinations that offer visa-free entry or visa-on-arrival facilities, significantly reducing the stress and uncertainty of travel planning. As a result, countries in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and even Central Asia are becoming the new hotspots on the Indian travel map.
Vietnam: The Breakout Star
Perhaps no country exemplifies this trend better than Vietnam. Once a niche destination, it has exploded in popularity, with Indian arrivals growing by a staggering 59.1% in early 2026 compared to the previous year. The appeal is multi-faceted. Vietnam offers an incredible diversity of experiences, from the emerald waters and limestone karsts of Ha Long Bay to the lantern-lit streets of ancient Hoi An and the bustling energy of Ho Chi Minh City. It is celebrated for being a budget-friendly gem where travellers can enjoy rich cultural encounters, delicious street food, and stunning landscapes at a fraction of the cost of a European vacation. The availability of a simple e-visa process and increased direct flights have further cemented its position as a go-to choice.
Thailand and Indonesia: The Enduring Favourites
Long-time favourites Thailand and Indonesia continue to attract Indian tourists in record numbers by constantly reinventing their offerings. Thailand, often called the 'ultimate first international destination' for Indians, combines affordability with world-class beaches, vibrant nightlife, and rich temple culture. Its visa-free entry policy makes it incredibly accessible for spontaneous trips. Similarly, Bali in Indonesia remains a top choice, especially for honeymooners and wellness seekers. It offers a magical blend of spiritual retreats in Ubud, trendy beach clubs in Seminyak, and breathtaking natural beauty, all with a convenient visa-on-arrival option for Indians.
The Middle East: More Than Just Dubai
While Dubai remains a perennial favourite for its blend of luxury, shopping, and entertainment, Indian travellers are now exploring more of what the Middle East has to offer. Countries like Oman are actively courting Indian tourists with their unique mix of dramatic landscapes, rich heritage, and adventure activities. Oman recorded a 36% increase in Indian arrivals in the first five months of 2026. These destinations provide a shorter flight time and a different kind of cultural experience, from ancient souks to stunning desert scenery, appealing to those looking for a quick yet enriching international break.
Central Asia: The New Frontier
An adventurous new frontier for Indian travellers is Central Asia. Countries like Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan are emerging as compelling, off-the-beaten-path destinations. Online searches for cities like Almaty and Baku have surged, driven by curiosity for their unique blend of Silk Road history, Soviet-era architecture, and stunning natural landscapes. These destinations are not only affordable but also offer an authentic, less-crowded alternative to more traditional tourist spots. The availability of e-visas makes exploring the rich heritage of cities like Samarkand and Bukhara in Uzbekistan easier than ever.
