Understanding October's Weather
October marks the official end of the Southwest Monsoon for much of India, ushering in clearer skies and cooler, drier air, especially in the north. However, this withdrawal is not a simple switch-off. The retreating moisture often leads to the Northeast
Monsoon, which brings significant rainfall to parts of the southern peninsula, particularly Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Elsewhere, the tail-end of the monsoon can still trigger showers in the Himalayas and the Northeast. Simultaneously, the Bay of Bengal can become active with cyclonic systems. This makes checking short-term forecasts essential before you travel.
South India: Kerala and Tamil Nadu
While much of India dries out, the southern states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu enter their second rainy season. October is typically one of the wettest months for this region as the Northeast Monsoon sets in. Destinations like Munnar and Wayanad will be spectacularly green but expect daily showers. In Kerala, rainfall averages around 270mm spread across the month. While the rain is often in the form of intermittent showers rather than constant downpours, it can disrupt sightseeing. Heavy rain is forecast across Kerala and Tamil Nadu in early October. If you're planning a trip here, pack waterproof gear and keep your itinerary flexible.
The Himalayas: Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand
October is generally a fantastic time for the mountains, with clear skies offering stunning views. However, the early part of the month can still see lingering monsoon activity. Recent forecasts from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) indicate that rainfall is expected in both Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand in the first week of October. While the main monsoon has withdrawn, these late showers can increase the risk of landslides on mountain roads. High-altitude areas like Lahaul and Spiti are accessible, but this is often the last window before winter snows close the passes. Always check local road conditions and weather alerts before starting a journey in the hills.
Northeast India: Lingering Showers
Post-monsoon is widely considered the best time to visit Northeast India, with lush landscapes and pleasant temperatures. Major attractions like Kaziranga National Park reopen in October. However, the region can still experience the tail-end of the monsoon. Forecasts for early October show continued rainfall in states like Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya. The showers are usually not as intense as during the peak monsoon, but it's wise to be prepared for wet weather, especially in the first half of the month. Packing layers and waterproofs is essential.
Andaman and Nicobar Islands: Cyclone Season
October is a transitional month for the Andaman Islands, as the heavy monsoon recedes and the peak tourist season approaches. While the weather can be pleasant, this period also marks the beginning of the cyclone season in the Bay of Bengal. A cyclonic circulation is being monitored, with the potential to intensify around mid-October. Such systems can lead to rough seas, high winds, and heavy rain, causing cancellation of ferries and water activities. While a cyclone is not a certainty, travellers should monitor weather alerts closely and have flexible travel plans.
