sunscreen on your house. While a typical black or dark grey roof absorbs the vast majority of the sun's energy and transfers that heat into the building, a cool roof bounces that energy back into the atmosphere, keeping the surface and the rooms below significantly cooler. These coatings are often water-based acrylic paints filled with special pigments like titanium dioxide that are engineered to scatter sunlight.
The Science of Staying Cool
The effectiveness of a cool roof is based on two key properties: solar reflectance and thermal emittance. Solar reflectance, or albedo, measures how much solar energy is reflected away from the surface. A standard roof might reflect only 20% of sunlight, while a cool roof can reflect 80% or more. Thermal emittance is the roof's ability to radiate away any heat that it has absorbed. Together, these properties ensure that less heat penetrates the building. Studies have shown this can lower roof surface temperatures by as much as 30°C and reduce indoor temperatures by a noticeable 3°C to 5°C, and in some cases even more.

Indian governments at various levels are recognising the potential of this technology. Telangana became the first state to launch a 'Cool Roof Policy' in 2023, with ambitious targets to cover 300 square kilometres of roofs by 2028. Similarly, Tamil Nadu launched a Standard Operating Procedure for cool roof application in June 2026 to promote its use in public and private buildings. While highly effective, there are some considerations. The roof surface must be thoroughly cleaned and repaired before application. The reflectivity can diminish over time due to dust and dirt, so an annual cleaning is recommended to maintain performance. Finally, in regions with cold winters, the reduced heat absorption might slightly increase heating needs, but for the vast majority of urban India, the summer cooling benefits far outweigh this.
