With Cyclone Arnab forecast to bring severe weather, travel becomes a significant risk. For senior citizens, this risk is magnified. Here are the essential checks to ensure safety if travel is absolutely unavoidable during the storm.
First, Reconsider Your Travel
The single most important
step is to honestly assess if the journey is necessary. Official advisories from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and local authorities consistently urge the public to avoid unnecessary travel during a cyclone warning. With Cyclone Arnab expected to bring heavy rain and winds gusting up to 140 km/h, road and rail transport are already being impacted, with numerous train services cancelled and flights potentially facing delays or cancellations. For seniors, especially those with mobility issues or chronic health conditions, the safest option is always to postpone the trip and shelter in place. If you must travel, inform friends and family of your detailed itinerary, including your route and accommodation details.
The Medical Go-Bag: A Non-Negotiable Priority
For seniors, a standard first-aid kit is not enough. An emergency medical go-bag is critical. It must contain at least a seven to fourteen-day supply of all prescription and over-the-counter medications. Create a laminated or waterproof list of all medications, their dosages, the prescribing doctor's name, and their contact information. Include any necessary medical supplies like glucose monitors, blood pressure cuffs, hearing aid batteries, or portable oxygen. If a medication like insulin needs to be kept cool, have an insulated bag and ice packs ready. Disasters can interrupt care and exacerbate chronic illnesses, so being self-sufficient is key.
Pack for Power Outages and Communication Gaps
Storms frequently cause power cuts, which can disable ATMs and mobile networks. Pack a battery-powered or hand-crank radio to listen for official updates, as your phone may not receive alerts. Carry a fully charged portable power bank for your mobile phone. Keep a physical, waterproof list of all emergency contacts, including family, doctors, and hotels, as you cannot rely solely on your phone's contact list. Have enough cash in small denominations to last several days. Also, pack flashlights with extra batteries for every member of the travelling party.
Essential Documents and Supplies
Keep all your critical documents in a waterproof bag that's easy to grab. This includes copies of your ID (like an Aadhaar card or passport), insurance policies, medical records, and travel confirmations for flights or hotels. Along with documents, pack for survival and comfort. This includes nonperishable food that requires no cooking, several litres of bottled water, and a manual can opener. Pack extra clothing, sturdy waterproof shoes, blankets, and basic hygiene items like disinfecting wipes and toilet paper.
Navigating the Journey Safely
If you are travelling by car, keep the fuel tank at least halffull at all times, as power outages can shut down petrol pumps. Familiarise yourself with the route and potential shelters like hotels or designated public facilities along the way. Do not rely only on digital maps; carry a physical map as a backup. Never attempt to drive through flooded roads, as the water can hide downed power lines or damaged surfaces. If caught in the storm while driving, it is safer to pull over to a sturdy shelter than to try and outdrive it. Avoid parking under trees or near structures with large, unsupported roofs.
On Arrival: Know Your Shelter
Once you arrive at your destination, whether it's a hotel or a relative's home, identify the safest part of the building. This is typically an internal room on the lowest floor with no windows, like a bathroom or closet. Ask hotel staff about their emergency procedures and the location of any designated storm shelters. During the cyclone, stay indoors and away from all windows and glass doors. Remember that there can be a calm 'eye' in the middle of the storm; do not go outside until authorities have given the official allclear.
