The ‘New Rules’: A Shift to Spend-Based Access
The biggest change in recent years is the move by major Indian banks from offering unconditionally free lounge visits to a spend-based model. Previously, simply holding an eligible card was enough. Now, for many entry-level and mid-tier cards, you must
meet a minimum spending threshold in a calendar quarter to unlock complimentary lounge access for the next quarter. This policy shift was driven by the rising costs for banks as lounge usage surged. By linking the benefit to spending, banks ensure the perk is awarded to active cardholders. While it adds a condition, it keeps the benefit accessible on cards without hefty annual fees.
How Spend-Based Qualification Works
Understanding the mechanics is simple but crucial. Banks track your spending over a three-month calendar quarter (e.g., January-March). If your total eligible spending in that period crosses the required threshold, you become eligible for one or more lounge visits in the following quarter (e.g., April-June). For example, a card might require a spend of ₹50,000 in a quarter to grant you one complimentary domestic lounge visit in the next. It's important to note that only settled transactions count, and things like EMI payments or wallet loads are often excluded. You must check your card's specific terms to know what constitutes eligible spending.
Entry-Level Cards Offering Lounge Access
Despite the new conditions, several accessible cards still provide this valuable perk. These cards typically have low or waivable annual fees, making them a great starting point. Axis Bank My Zone Credit Card: A popular entry-level choice, this card offers one complimentary domestic lounge visit per calendar quarter. To qualify, you need to have spent at least ₹50,000 in the previous three-month period. The card is known for its additional benefits on platforms like Swiggy and SonyLIV, making it a good all-rounder for lifestyle spending. ICICI Bank Coral Credit Card: This card provides one complimentary domestic airport lounge visit per quarter. The catch is a higher spending requirement of ₹75,000 in the preceding calendar quarter to unlock the benefit. The access is only for the primary cardholder. The card also offers benefits on movie tickets, making it a decent option for entertainment-focused users. HDFC Bank Millennia Credit Card: Once offering direct complimentary access, the Millennia card now integrates it into its milestone benefits program. After spending ₹1 lakh in a calendar quarter, you get to choose between a ₹1,000 gift voucher or one complimentary lounge access voucher. This means you are essentially forgoing a direct cash-equivalent voucher for the lounge visit, a trade-off to consider.
Maximising Your Lounge Benefit
To make the most of this perk, planning is key. First, identify the spending requirement for your specific card and track your quarterly expenses to ensure you meet the threshold. Before heading to the airport, confirm which lounges at your departure terminal accept your card, as participation can vary. Most lounge access programmes are managed by networks like Dreamfolks for domestic travel. Remember that complimentary access is almost always limited to the primary cardholder; any guests travelling with you will likely be charged a separate entry fee. Finally, keep in mind that these visits are usually capped at one or two per quarter for entry-level cards, so use them on longer layovers where the benefit of comfort and amenities is greatest.
