Master Your Airflow
Stagnant air traps humidity, making your room feel warmer and stickier. The simplest solution is to get the air moving. Use a ceiling fan or strategically placed pedestal fans to create a cross-breeze. Point one fan towards you to help sweat evaporate
from your skin, which is your body’s natural cooling mechanism. If the air outside is cooler and less humid than inside—typically in the early morning or late at night—open your windows to exchange the heavy indoor air for fresh, dry air. However, during the peak heat of the day, it's often better to keep windows and curtains closed to prevent hotter, more humid air from entering.
Choose Breathable Bedding
The sheets and blankets you sleep under play a huge role in your comfort. Heavy, non-breathable fabrics trap heat and moisture, creating a damp and unpleasant sleep environment. Instead, opt for natural, breathable materials known for their moisture-wicking properties. Linen is an excellent choice as it has exceptional airflow and can absorb moisture without feeling damp. Bamboo is another top contender, praised for its silky feel and ability to pull sweat away from the body. High-quality cotton, specifically in a percale weave, offers a crisp, cool feel and good breathability. While it may sound counterintuitive, lightweight wool can also be effective due to its natural temperature and moisture-regulating properties. Avoid synthetic fabrics like polyester, which tend to trap heat and humidity.
Actively Reduce Room Humidity
If creating airflow isn't enough, it's time to actively remove moisture from the air. An electric dehumidifier is the most effective tool for this job, working to pull litres of water from your bedroom's atmosphere. For this to work best, keep bedroom doors and windows closed. If you don't have a dehumidifier, an air conditioner also effectively removes moisture as part of its cooling process. For a more low-tech approach, you can try natural desiccants. Placing bowls of rock salt or baking soda in the room can help absorb ambient moisture, though this method is best suited for smaller, enclosed spaces like wardrobes. Some houseplants, such as Boston ferns and snake plants, are also known to absorb some moisture from the air through their leaves.
Cool Down Your Body
Lowering your body temperature before bed can make it easier to drift off, even in a humid room. A lukewarm or cool shower right before you get into bed can help. A hot shower might seem relaxing, but it will increase both your body temperature and the humidity in your home. Pay attention to your sleepwear as well; choose loose-fitting pyjamas made from the same breathable fabrics recommended for bedding, like cotton or bamboo. Or, even better, sleep with as little clothing as you are comfortable with to allow for maximum air circulation around your body. Staying hydrated during the day is important, but avoid drinking large amounts of liquid right before bed to prevent waking up.
Optimise Your Bedroom Environment
A few final tweaks can make a surprising difference. First, check your home for any leaks in pipes or roofs, as these can be hidden sources of excess moisture. Avoid drying laundry indoors, as this releases a large amount of water vapour into the air. If you must dry clothes inside, ensure the room is extremely well-ventilated. Finally, consider the ideal humidity level for sleep, which experts say is between 40% and 60%. You can monitor this with a simple, inexpensive device called a hygrometer. Keeping the humidity within this range not only improves comfort but also helps prevent the growth of mould and dust mites, which thrive in damp conditions.
