Forget spring. In the rolling hills of Meghalaya, autumn unveils a breathtaking secret. While the rest of the country settles into fall, the city of Shillong bursts into a vibrant spectacle of pink and white, thanks to its unique autumn cherry blossoms.
An Autumn Anomaly
Most people associate cherry blossoms with the arrival of spring in Japan. But in the Khasi Hills of Meghalaya, nature follows a different calendar. Here, the Wild Himalayan Cherry, or Prunus cerasoides, puts on its stunning floral display between late October and November. These deciduous trees shed their leaves after the monsoon, and before winter truly sets in, their bare branches erupt in clusters of delicate pink and soft white flowers, creating a surreal landscape that glows in the crisp autumn light. This rare autumn bloom makes Shillong one of the few places in the world to host a cherry blossom festival outside of springtime, offering a truly unique sight for travellers. The local Khasi name for the tree is Dieng Sohїongkrem.
Shillong: The Heart of the Bloom
Shillong, the state's capital, becomes the epicentre of this pink phenomenon. While the trees grow wild across the region, the city offers some of the most accessible and picturesque viewing spots. Ward's Lake is arguably the most iconic location, where the blossom-laden branches hang over the water, creating stunning reflections on still mornings. Strolling around the lake's colonial-era pathways under a canopy of pink is a quintessential Shillong experience. Other key areas to witness the bloom include the sprawling Shillong Golf Course, where pink trees stand out against the dark pines, the roads around Polo Ground, and the serene gardens of Lady Hydari Park. Even a simple drive towards Upper Shillong reveals beautiful pockets of colour along the winding hill roads.
A Festival of Music and Culture
To celebrate this natural spectacle, the city hosts the Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival, an event that has grown from a small local affair into a major international music festival. The 2026 edition is scheduled for November 20th and 21st. The festival has become a massive draw, attracting renowned international and Indian artists. This year's lineup includes international acts like Khalid, Swae Lee, and Boys Like Girls. Beyond the headline music acts, the festival is a vibrant showcase of Meghalayan culture, featuring food stalls offering local delicacies, craft markets selling bamboo and wood handicrafts, and various cultural performances. Since its inception in 2016, the festival has cemented itself as a cornerstone of Meghalaya's tourism calendar, blending natural beauty with contemporary entertainment.
Planning Your Pink Pilgrimage
The best time to witness the blossoms is typically the first half of November, though the exact timing can vary slightly each year depending on the weather. The post-monsoon weather in November is ideal for travel, with clear skies and pleasant, cool temperatures. To reach Shillong, most travellers fly into Guwahati's Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (GAU), which is well-connected to major Indian cities, and then take a scenic threendrive to Shillong. Given the festival's popularity, it's wise to book accommodation well in advance, especially for dates coinciding with the event. Packing layers is essential; days are comfortable, but evenings and nights can get quite chilly.
Beyond the Blossoms
While the cherry blossoms are a magnificent draw, Meghalaya offers a wealth of other attractions to round out your trip. A short drive from Shillong lies the stunning Umiam Lake, a vast reservoir perfect for boating and watersports. You can also explore the state's famous waterfalls, like Elephant Falls, which are still impressive after the monsoon. For a truly unique experience, consider a day trip to see the incredible Living Root Bridges near Cherrapunji or visit Mawlynnong, often cited as one of Asia's cleanest villages. These natural and cultural wonders provide a deeper look into what makes Meghalaya such an enchanting destination, ensuring that a trip for the blossoms becomes a much richer adventure.
