Lighten Your Product Layers
When the air is heavy with moisture, the last thing your skin needs is heavy creams. Thick moisturisers that work wonders in dry weather can feel suffocating and clog pores in high humidity. This is the season to switch to lighter formulations. Opt for water-based
or gel-based moisturisers that provide hydration without feeling greasy. Ingredients like hyaluronic acid are excellent because they hydrate the skin without adding weight. A lightweight serum followed by a gel cream can deliver necessary nutrients and moisture, allowing your skin to breathe. Think of it as switching your winter coat for a light jacket—your skin needs to adapt to the season, too.
Cleanse Thoroughly, But Gently
With increased sweat and oil production, cleansing becomes more important than ever. Sweat, oil, and environmental pollutants can form a film on your skin, leading to congestion and breakouts. Aim to wash your face twice a day, morning and night, to remove this buildup. Use a gentle, non-stripping cleanser to avoid irritating your skin. Over-washing or using harsh formulas can strip the skin's natural barrier, ironically causing it to produce even more oil. For those who wear makeup or sunscreen, consider double cleansing in the evening. Start with an oil-based cleanser to dissolve products, followed by a gentle water-based wash to purify the skin.
Don't Skip the Moisturiser
It’s a common myth that oily or sticky-feeling skin in humid weather doesn’t need moisturiser. In reality, skipping this step can be counterproductive. When your skin becomes dehydrated, your sebaceous glands may overcompensate by producing even more oil. The key is not to skip moisturiser, but to choose the right kind. A lightweight, non-comedogenic (meaning it won't clog pores) and oil-free formula is your best friend in a humid climate. These moisturisers maintain the skin's hydration balance, keeping it plump and preventing the cycle of dehydration and excess oil production. Look for gel or water-based products that absorb quickly.
Sunscreen is Still a Non-Negotiable
Cloudy, rainy days might make you think you can skip sunscreen, but harmful UV rays penetrate through the clouds. In fact, sun protection remains one of the most critical steps in any skincare routine, regardless of the weather. In humid conditions, the challenge is finding a sunscreen that doesn't feel heavy or greasy. Look for oil-free, gel-based, or water-based sunscreens with broad-spectrum protection of at least SPF 30. These modern formulas are designed to absorb quickly without leaving a sticky residue or a white cast, making them comfortable for daily wear. Reapplying every few hours is also crucial, especially if you've been sweating.
Exfoliate Wisely to Prevent Buildup
Exfoliation helps to remove the buildup of dead skin cells, sweat, and oil that can clog pores and lead to a dull complexion. This is especially important in humid weather when your skin is more prone to congestion. However, it's crucial to be gentle. Over-exfoliating can irritate the skin and damage its protective barrier. Instead of harsh physical scrubs, consider using a chemical exfoliant with ingredients like salicylic acid (a beta-hydroxy acid, or BHA) or glycolic acid (an alpha-hydroxy acid, or AHA) one to three times a week. Salicylic acid is particularly effective as it can penetrate into the pores to dissolve oil.
Go Minimal with Makeup
Heavy, full-coverage foundation can trap sweat and oil, creating the perfect environment for breakouts in humid weather. This is an ideal time to embrace a more minimal makeup routine and let your skin breathe. If you prefer some coverage, opt for lightweight alternatives like a tinted moisturiser, BB cream, or a powder foundation. Non-comedogenic makeup is specifically formulated to not clog pores. Using blotting papers throughout the day can also help absorb excess shine without piling on more product. Simply press a sheet against oily areas to lift away the grease without disturbing your makeup.
