Cities like Vijayawada, for instance, recorded a staggering 45.5% increase in AI roles, putting it on the map as a serious emerging hub. The government has already approved over 500 such labs for ITIs and polytechnics in cities like Gorakhpur, Lucknow, Shimla, Patna, and Haridwar. The goal is to train a new generation of students in practical skills like data annotation and data science, creating a skilled workforce right where they live. This national strategy is complemented by aggressive state-level policies, with governments in Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, and Punjab offering incentives like capex subsidies and tax breaks to attract tech investment.
The Emerging Contenders
So, which cities are poised to become the next AI hotspots? Besides the remarkable growth in Vijayawada, several other urban centres are making a strong case. A 2026 report from the learning platform Scaler highlighted that while Bengaluru, Pune, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Chennai remain the top five AI talent hubs, nearly one in five AI learners now comes from Tier-2 cities. This list includes Lucknow, Jaipur, Patna, Indore, Coimbatore, and Nagpur. Each city brings unique strengths. Ahmedabad, with its GIFT City, is becoming a fintech and GCC magnet. Emerging job titles include Generative AI Engineer and AI Practitioner, and skills in AI agents and productivity tools are highly sought after. Furthermore, AI is no longer confined to the IT department. A recent report noted that over 50% of AI-enabled career outcomes now fall outside traditional engineering, in fields like leadership, marketing, HR, and finance.
