E-Visas and Budgeting Basics
Getting to Azerbaijan is refreshingly straightforward for Indian passport holders. The country offers an 'ASAN' e-visa system that makes the application process a breeze. Simply visit the official portal (evisa.gov.az), fill out the form, upload a copy
of your passport, and pay the fee. A standard tourist e-visa typically costs around $29 USD and is processed within three working days, allowing a single-entry stay of up to 30 days. For budgeting, Azerbaijan is quite affordable. Excluding flights, a comfortable daily budget would be around ₹4,000–₹5,000. This covers a stay in a well-rated hostel or budget hotel, meals at local cafes, public transport, and entry fees for most attractions. Baku has an efficient metro and bus system, with single journeys costing less than 30 manat (around ₹15), making it cheap to get around. Ride-hailing apps are also widely available and inexpensive.
Day 1: Arrival and Old City Exploration
Fly into Heydar Aliyev International Airport (GYD). The most budget-friendly way to reach the city center is via the Airport Express Bus (H1 Shuttle), which takes you to the 28 May Metro Station for a small fee. After checking into your accommodation, dedicate the afternoon to Icherisheher, Baku's ancient walled Old City and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Entry to the Old City itself is free, allowing you to wander its labyrinthine cobblestone streets at no cost. For dinner, find a local cafe within the walls serving traditional Azerbaijani food like plov (pilaf) and kebabs.
Day 2: Modern Marvels and a Seaside Stroll
Today is about Baku's stunning modern architecture. Start with a visit to the Heydar Aliyev Center, an architectural masterpiece designed by Zaha Hadid, famous for its flowing, curved design. While entry has a fee, the building's exterior is a spectacle in itself and perfect for photos. In the afternoon, head to the iconic Flame Towers, three skyscrapers that dominate the city's skyline. For the best views, take the funicular up to Highland Park. As evening approaches, stroll along the Baku Boulevard, a beautiful promenade on the Caspian Sea coast, and watch the Flame Towers light up with a spectacular LED show.
Day 3: A Dive into History and Culture
Return to the Old City for a deeper exploration of its key monuments. Begin at the Palace of the Shirvanshahs, a 15th-century complex that was the seat of northeast Azerbaijan's ruling dynasty. Afterwards, climb the enigmatic Maiden Tower for panoramic views of the Old City and the bay. Both sites have admission fees but are essential for understanding Baku's history. In the afternoon, visit the unique Azerbaijan Carpet Museum, housed in a building shaped like a rolled-up carpet, to admire the intricate local craftsmanship.
Day 4: The Land of Fire Day Trip
No trip to Azerbaijan is complete without witnessing its natural fires. Take a day trip to the Absheron Peninsula. You can do this affordably using public buses or by booking a budget-friendly group tour. First, visit the Ateshgah Fire Temple, a historic sanctuary once used by Hindu, Sikh, and Zoroastrian worshippers, built around a natural gas vent. Next, head to Yanar Dag, the “Burning Mountain,” a hillside that has been continuously ablaze for centuries due to natural gas reserves. It’s a surreal sight, especially as dusk falls.
Day 5: Prehistoric Art and Mud Volcanoes
Embark on another fascinating day trip, this time to Gobustan National Park, about 60 km south of Baku. The park is famous for its thousands of ancient rock petroglyphs, some dating back 40,000 years, offering a glimpse into prehistoric life. Nearby, you’ll find another of Azerbaijan's quirky natural wonders: the mud volcanoes. The country is home to nearly a third of the world's mud volcanoes, which bubble and spurt with cold, grey mud. Many tour operators offer combined half-day trips to both sites.
Day 6: Last-Minute Souvenirs and Departure
Spend your final morning shopping for souvenirs. For an authentic experience, skip the tourist shops and head to a local market like the Taza Bazaar, where you can find everything from local sweets and spices to handicrafts. The Museum of Miniature Books in the Old City is another quirky and free attraction worth a quick visit. Depending on your flight schedule, enjoy one last Azerbaijani tea before heading back to Heydar Aliyev International Airport for your journey home.
