The Shifting Landscape of Lounge Access
For years, complimentary airport lounge access was a major selling point for credit and debit cards in India. Banks offered it generously, even on entry-level cards, to attract new customers. However, a surge in air travel and the growing popularity of this
perk led to overcrowding and long queues outside lounges. The cost for banks also ballooned, as they pay a fee for every customer who swipes their card for entry. In response, major banks across India, including HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, and Axis Bank, have fundamentally changed their approach. The era of passive, unconditional lounge access is ending, replaced by a model that rewards active, high-spending customers.
Understanding the New Rule: Spend to Enter
The new system is built around a simple principle: you must meet a minimum spending threshold on your card to unlock lounge access. This is typically calculated on a quarterly or monthly basis. For example, a bank might require you to spend ₹50,000 in a calendar quarter (like April-June) to become eligible for complimentary lounge visits in the next quarter (July-September). These spending milestones vary significantly depending on the bank and the specific card. For many mid-tier credit cards, the quarterly spend requirement ranges from ₹35,000 to ₹75,000. Some HDFC Bank cards, for instance, now require spending of ₹60,000 to ₹1 lakh in the previous quarter. This makes tracking your expenses against your card's specific target essential.
It’s Not Just Credit Cards Anymore
These changes are not confined to credit cards. Debit cards, which were once a straightforward way to access lounges, are also seeing major revisions. Many RuPay debit cards, which previously offered lounge access as a standard feature, moved to a spend-based model in 2026. For example, some HDFC Bank debit cardholders now need to spend ₹10,000 in a quarter to qualify, and instead of swiping their card, they receive a digital voucher to claim their access. This adds an extra step to the process and requires you to be proactive in claiming your benefit before you even head to the airport.
Strategies to Meet Your Spending Milestones
With these new rules, retaining your lounge access requires a more strategic approach to your finances. Simply holding the right card is no longer enough. The first step is to consolidate your spending. Instead of spreading your purchases across multiple cards, pick one primary card for all your expenses—from groceries and utility bills to online shopping—to ensure you hit the quarterly target. Plan your big-ticket purchases, such as electronics, insurance premiums, or travel bookings, to fall within a specific quarter to help you meet the threshold. It is also crucial to check your card’s billing cycle and the bank's definition of a quarter to avoid miscalculating your spends. Always check your bank’s app or website to monitor your progress toward the spending goal.
Is Chasing the Milestone Worth It?
This shift forces travellers to ask a critical question: is the effort of meeting these spending goals worth the reward? For frequent flyers, planning expenses to retain lounge access can offer significant value and comfort. However, for infrequent travellers, it might not make financial sense to spend extra just to unlock a perk you'll only use once or twice a year. In such cases, exploring other options might be more practical. Consider upgrading to a super-premium credit card that still offers unlimited or guaranteed lounge access without spending conditions, though these come with higher annual fees. Alternatively, simply paying for lounge access on the rare occasions you need it could prove more economical than altering your spending habits.
