The Indian IT industry, a cornerstone of the nation's economy, is in the midst of a profound transformation. Generative AI is no longer a futuristic concept but a present-day reality, automating routine tasks and boosting productivity. Reports from August
2026 show that IT firms are generating more revenue per employee, a trend partly attributed to AI integration. This efficiency gain, however, comes with a significant consequence. As AI handles routine coding, data entry, and testing, the demand for traditional IT roles is shrinking, particularly at the entry level. A recent World Bank report highlighted that white-collar, entry-level workers are already facing a disproportionate impact from this shift. Over 73% of Indian professionals now report using AI at work, a massive jump from previous years, signalling that adoption has moved from experimental to essential.
Understanding the New Skills Chasm
The skills gap isn't about a lack of people; it's about a mismatch of capabilities. Industry body NASSCOM has repeatedly warned that while India has a massive talent pool, a significant chasm exists between demand and supply for advanced skills. The demand for AI professionals is expected to cross one million by 2026, but employers report significant challenges in finding qualified candidates. One recent NASSCOM report noted that while many young professionals are 'AI-proficient,' only 23% could be considered truly 'AI-native,' possessing deep engineering expertise rather than just a surface-level ability to use AI tools. The fear is that the decline of routine coding work, which traditionally built foundational knowledge, could lead to a generation of engineers who are AI-reliant without possessing strong fundamental technical skills.
The Most In-Demand AI Competencies
So, what skills are companies desperately seeking? It's a combination of technical expertise and strategic thinking. The core abilities in 2026 include Python programming, machine learning, deep-learning frameworks like PyTorch, and cloud platform proficiency. Beyond these, there is high demand for roles like ML Engineer, Data Scientist, and DevOps Engineer. However, it's not just about hard skills. As AI automates technical tasks, human-centric capabilities like critical thinking, problem-solving, and AI governance are becoming equally crucial. The goal for professionals is to move beyond simply using AI tools to understanding how to build, train, and deploy AI systems responsibly and effectively to solve complex business problems.
The Industry's Race to Reskill
Recognizing the urgency, India's IT giants and academic institutions are scrambling to bridge the gap. Major companies like TCS are running massive internal reskilling initiatives to make their workforce AI-literate. At the same time, industry-academia partnerships are emerging, such as the collaboration between EY India and Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) to launch a program preparing students for AI-enabled careers. NASSCOM and the government have also launched initiatives like FutureSkills Prime to scale digital capability building. However, challenges remain. A recent report found that 45% of organisations identify AI and data skills as their biggest constraint, yet many lack the capability to address the training challenge at scale. With India formally training a very small percentage of its workforce compared to other nations, the need for effective, hands-on learning has become critical.
Avoiding a Two-Tier Workforce
If the skills gap continues to widen, the Indian IT sector risks creating a divided workforce. On one side, a highly-paid elite with in-demand AI skills will drive innovation and command premium salaries. On the other, a large segment of the workforce with outdated skills could face job insecurity, displacement, or stagnant wages. Studies suggest generative AI could impact millions of jobs in India, with routine, data-intensive tasks being the most vulnerable to automation. The challenge is not just to create a few AI experts but to elevate the capabilities of the entire workforce. This requires a fundamental shift in mindset—from viewing education as a one-time event to embracing a culture of continuous learning and adaptation.
