Currency and Exchange Rates
The official currency of Vietnam is the Vietnamese Dong (VND). As of late 2026, the exchange rate hovers around 1 INR to 270 VND. This means 1,000 Indian Rupees will get you approximately 270,000 VND. The sheer number of zeroes can be confusing, so take
your time during transactions. The 20,000 VND and 500,000 VND notes share a similar blue colour, so always double-check. While US dollars are sometimes accepted in large hotels, it's best to use VND for daily expenses to get the best value. For the most favourable exchange rates, look for gold and jewellery shops in major towns, which often offer better rates than banks or airport currency counters. ATMs are widely available but may charge a withdrawal fee.
Accommodation Costs
Your biggest expense will likely be accommodation, but Phu Quoc offers a wide spectrum of options. For budget travellers, guesthouses and homestays are plentiful, especially in the main town of Duong Dong, with prices ranging from about 700,000 to 1,400,000 VND (₹2,600–₹5,200) per night. A mid-range traveller can find comfortable 3-star hotels or boutique resorts, often with a pool, for 1,400,000 to 3,500,000 VND (₹5,200–₹13,000) per night. If you're looking for luxury, 5-star beachfront resorts can range from 3,500,000 VND to over 11,500,000 VND (₹13,000–₹42,500) per night, offering premium amenities and private beaches. Booking in advance, especially during the peak season from December to March, is highly recommended.
Food and Drink Expenses
One of Phu Quoc's highlights is its incredible food, which can be surprisingly affordable. A budget-conscious traveller can eat well for under 500,000 VND (₹1,850) per day. A delicious Banh Mi sandwich from a street vendor costs as little as 25,000 VND (₹90), while a hearty bowl of noodles like the local specialty 'bun quay' is about 60,000 VND (₹220). For dinner, the Dinh Cau Night Market is a must-visit, where a fresh seafood meal can cost between 150,000 and 300,000 VND (₹550–₹1,100). A local Bia Saigon beer will set you back about 25,000 VND (₹90) at a local spot. Dining at upscale resort restaurants will be significantly more expensive, with main courses often starting from 200,000 VND (₹740).
Transportation on the Island
Phu Quoc is a large island, so you'll need to budget for transport. The most popular and flexible option is renting a scooter, which costs around 150,000–250,000 VND (₹550–₹925) per day. This gives you the freedom to explore hidden beaches and remote corners at your own pace. If you're not comfortable on a scooter, ride-hailing apps like Grab are widely available and affordable for shorter trips. A 5 km ride from the airport to the popular Long Beach area costs around 60,000 VND (₹220). Taxis are also available but are generally more expensive. For longer excursions, you might consider negotiating a half-day or full-day rate with a car driver.
Activities and Attractions
While many of Phu Quoc's beautiful beaches and pagodas are free to visit, some of its most famous attractions have entry fees. A ticket for VinWonders, a massive theme park, costs 950,000 VND (₹3,500) for an adult. A visit to the Vinpearl Safari park costs 650,000 VND (₹2,400). One of the island's most iconic experiences is the Sun World cable car to Hon Thom (Pineapple Island), the world's longest sea-crossing cable car, with a round-trip ticket costing around 850,000 VND (₹3,150). Smaller attractions like Suoi Tranh Waterfall have a nominal entrance fee of about 30,000 VND (₹110). Island-hopping and snorkelling boat trips are also popular, typically costing between 350,000 and 600,000 VND (₹1,300–₹2,200) per person.
Sample Daily Budgets
To put it all together, here are some estimated daily budgets per person, excluding major activities: Budget Traveller: 800,000–1,200,000 VND (₹3,000–₹4,500). This covers a guesthouse stay, scooter rental, and meals at local restaurants and street food stalls. Mid-Range Traveller: 1,500,000–2,500,000 VND (₹5,500–₹9,250). This allows for a comfortable mid-range hotel, a mix of local and restaurant dining, and using Grab for transport.* Luxury Traveller: 4,000,000 VND and up (₹15,000+). This would include a stay at a luxury resort, fine dining, private tours, and spa treatments.
