Verify Timings and Expect Delays
The schedule for a special train is often temporary and subject to change. Always verify the departure and arrival times a day before your journey. During the peak festival rush, the railway network is under immense pressure, which can lead to delays. Use a live train tracking app to monitor your train's real-time status. This is crucial for avoiding long waits at the station or, even worse, missing your train due to a last-minute platform change. A special service can sometimes be regularised, so always check for the latest updates.
Your PNR Status Is Key
A ticket for a festival special train does not guarantee a confirmed seat from the get-go. Your PNR (Passenger Name Record) status is the most important piece of information. You can check your PNR status on the IRCTC website, via SMS to 139, or using various official partner apps. Your status can be Confirmed (CNF), Reservation Against Cancellation (RAC), or Waitlisted (WL). Keep checking your status until the final chart is prepared, which usually happens about four hours before departure. A waitlisted ticket that doesn't get confirmed means you are not allowed to board.
Find Your Platform and Coach
Major railway stations become incredibly crowded during festivals like Diwali and Chhath Puja. To avoid a last-minute panic, find out your platform number in advance through the NTES app or by checking the display boards at the station. Once on the platform, look for the coach position indicators. These digital displays show the order of coaches, helping you stand in the right place before the train arrives. In the absence of a display, ask authorised railway staff for guidance.
Know the On-Board Services
Services on special trains can be different from regular ones. While some may have pantry cars, others might not offer any food service. It's wise to carry your own food, snacks, and sufficient drinking water for the journey. Furthermore, bedding (linen and blankets) is often not provided on special services, so it is advisable to carry your own, especially for overnight journeys. Always confirm these details beforehand to avoid any discomfort during your travel.

While there are official luggage limits, platforms during festival seasons are chaotic. Travelling with less baggage makes it easier to navigate the crowds and board the train safely.
