Clothing for Temples and Tides
The key to dressing for Hampi and Gokarna is versatility. Hampi, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is hot, dusty, and requires a lot of walking in the sun. Its active temples, like the Virupaksha Temple, mandate a modest dress code. This means covering your
shoulders and knees. Pack lightweight, breathable cotton or linen trousers, long skirts, or palazzo pants. A scarf or shawl is a non-negotiable item; it’s perfect for covering up when entering a temple and can protect you from the sun. For Gokarna, your wardrobe can be more relaxed. Swimwear is acceptable on the beaches, but it's crucial to cover up when walking through the main town, which is a pilgrimage centre. A sarong or a long shirt that you can easily throw over your beachwear is the perfect solution. Pack light t-shirts, tops, and a light jacket or sweater for potentially cooler evenings, especially by the coast.
Footwear for Boulders and Beaches
You will be doing a significant amount of walking in Hampi, often across uneven, rocky terrain and up steep granite steps. Sturdy, comfortable walking shoes or sandals with good grip are essential. Since you need to remove footwear before entering temples, choose shoes that are easy to slip on and off. For Gokarna, a pair of flip-flops or beach sandals is all you need for the sand and shacks. Trying to make one pair of shoes work for both locations is a mistake. Prioritise a comfortable, broken-in pair for Hampi's explorations and a separate, water-friendly pair for Gokarna's coastal relaxation.
Health and Safety Kit
Being prepared for minor health issues can make your trip much smoother. Your kit should absolutely contain a high-SPF sunscreen, as you'll be exposed to strong sun in both locations. Insect repellent is another must-have, particularly for Hampi and the forested trekking paths around Gokarna. Pack a basic first-aid kit with essentials like antiseptic wipes, bandages, pain relievers, antihistamines, and any personal prescription medications. Oral rehydration salts are also a wise addition to combat dehydration from the heat. A hat and sunglasses are vital for sun protection during the day.
Money, Documents, and Tech
Cash is extremely important, especially in Hampi where many guesthouses and shops do not accept cards. ATMs can be scarce and are often located in nearby towns, so it's wise to carry enough cash to cover your expenses. In Gokarna, while some places accept digital payments, beach shacks are often cash-only. Always carry your ID and keep digital or physical copies of your travel documents. A power bank is a lifesaver, as power cuts can be frequent in more remote areas and you'll want to keep your phone charged for photos and navigation. A waterproof pouch for your electronics is also a great idea for any boat rides or beach time in Gokarna.
The Small Extras That Make a Difference
A few small items can greatly enhance your comfort and convenience. A reusable water bottle is essential for staying hydrated in the heat and is more sustainable than buying plastic bottles. A small, lightweight daypack is perfect for carrying your daily essentials like water, sunscreen, a camera, and snacks. A quick-dry towel is incredibly useful, taking up less space than a traditional towel and drying faster in humid conditions. Finally, if you plan on trekking between Gokarna's famous beaches, like from Kudle to Om beach, make sure your daypack is light and you're wearing sturdy footwear.
