The Perfect Pre-Winter Window
The ideal time to visit Meghalaya, particularly Sohra (Cherrapunji) and the surrounding villages, is between October and November. This post-monsoon period offers the best of both worlds: the waterfalls, still fed by the rains, are magnificent, and the landscape
is intensely lush. Unlike the monsoon months, which can bring travel disruptions and slippery trails, autumn provides clearer skies, pleasant temperatures ranging from 15°C to 25°C, and much safer trekking conditions. While winter (December to February) offers clear skies, many waterfalls dry up significantly, making the pre-winter shoulder season the prime time for the experiences mentioned in the headline.
The Living Marvels of Nongriat
The highlight for many is the trek to the Umshiang Double-Decker Root Bridge in Nongriat village. This is not a structure that was built, but one that has been grown and guided over generations by the Khasi people from the roots of the Ficus elastica tree. Reaching it is an adventure in itself, involving a descent of approximately 3,500 stone steps from the starting point at Tyrna village, a journey that takes about 4-6 hours for a round trip. The trail winds through dense subtropical forest, crossing smaller root bridges and steel suspension bridges over turquoise natural pools. While the trek is demanding, especially the climb back up, the reward is an otherworldly sight. For those wanting a less strenuous experience, the Riwai single root bridge near Mawlynnong offers a glimpse of this bio-engineering marvel without the intense trek.
Chasing Sohra’s Roaring Waterfalls
Sohra is a land of dramatic cliffs and legendary waterfalls, and they are at their most spectacular right after the monsoon. The most famous is Nohkalikai Falls, India's tallest plunge waterfall, which cascades over 340 metres into a stunning blue-green pool. Another must-see is the Nohsngithiang Falls, popularly known as the Seven Sisters Falls. This segmented waterfall, comprising seven streams, flows majestically down limestone cliffs, offering a breathtaking panorama, especially during sunrise and sunset. Other notable falls that are best viewed in this season include the three-tiered Kynrem Falls and the easily accessible Dainthlen and Wah Kaba Falls.
How to Plan Your Autumn Escape
Planning a trip is straightforward. The nearest major airport and railway station are in Guwahati, Assam, about 100 km from Shillong, Meghalaya's capital. From Guwahati, you can hire a taxi or take a shared sumo to Shillong (a 3-4 hour drive). Sohra is another 2-3 hour drive from Shillong. For accommodation, Shillong offers a wide range of hotels, while Sohra has resorts and homestays that serve as a great base for exploring the waterfalls and starting the trek to Nongriat. It's advisable to book accommodation in advance, as October and November are popular months. Pack light woollens for the cool evenings, a waterproof jacket for unexpected showers, and most importantly, sturdy shoes with a good grip for the treks.
A Suggested 5-Day Itinerary
To make the most of your trip without feeling rushed, a 5 to 6-day itinerary is ideal. You could spend Day 1 arriving in Shillong and exploring local sights like Umiam Lake. On Day 2, drive to Sohra, stopping at viewpoints and visiting Nohkalikai Falls and Mawsmai Cave. Dedicate Day 3 entirely to the challenging but rewarding trek to the Double-Decker Root Bridge in Nongriat; starting early is highly recommended to avoid the midday heat. On Day 4, explore more waterfalls around Sohra or drive to Mawlynnong and Dawki to see the crystal-clear Umngot River. Day 5 can be your journey back to Guwahati for your departure, perhaps with a final stop at a site like Krang Suri Falls if time permits.
