A Major Boost for Festive Travel
To ease the immense pressure on the railway network during the Puja, Diwali, and Chhath festival season, Central Railway is launching 418 special train services. This initiative is designed to connect major hubs like Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur with numerous
destinations across the country, ensuring more passengers can travel home for the holidays. The services will run between October and November 2026, covering the peak travel period for these major Indian festivals. This move is a significant step towards managing the surge in demand and providing much-needed relief to travellers who face heavily waitlisted tickets every year.
Connecting Mumbai to Key Destinations
These special services will enhance connectivity from Mumbai's major terminals—Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT)—to high-demand regions. A significant number of services are planned for North India, a popular direction for festive travel. Daily services are slated for the CSMT-Gorakhpur route, with 64 trips scheduled between October 16 and November 16. Other key routes from LTT include bi-weekly specials to Mau and Banaras in Uttar Pradesh. Connectivity to South India has also been boosted with weekly AC specials from CSMT to Chennai Beach and SMVT Bengaluru. Additionally, intra-state travel within Maharashtra is being catered to with special trains to Nagpur, Kolhapur, and a bi-weekly service to Latur.
How and When to Book Your Tickets
Booking for these special trains is opening in a phased manner. Reservations for many of these services opened on September 27 and September 28, 2026. Tickets for these 'Special' trains come with special charges, which may be higher than regular fares. Passengers can book their seats through the official IRCTC website (irctc.co.in), the RailOne mobile app, and at all computerised Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters. Given the extremely high demand, railway authorities strongly advise passengers to book their tickets as early as possible to avoid missing out. Some unreserved coaches may also be available, with tickets accessible via the UTS mobile app.
Tips for Navigating the Rush
Securing a ticket during the Diwali season requires planning and speed. For regular trains, the advance reservation period (ARP) can be up to 120 days, meaning many tickets for the Diwali period (November 8, 2026) were already opened months prior. However, these newly announced special trains offer a fresh opportunity. Be prepared with a Master List of passengers saved on your IRCTC profile to speed up the booking process. If your preferred train is waitlisted, keep checking for real-time status updates on the NTES portal or app. Be flexible with your travel dates; travelling a day or two before or after the peak dates can significantly increase your chances of getting a confirmed ticket. Also, consider routes to nearby stations if your destination's direct trains are full.
Understanding 'Special' Train Services
Festival special trains are deployed to handle seasonal demand and operate on temporary schedules. They are identifiable by their train numbers, which often start with '0'. The fare structure for these trains, known as 'special fare', is typically higher than that of their regular counterparts to account for the operational costs of running additional services on congested routes. These trains may have fewer stops than regular mail or express trains to ensure faster transit times. While they provide essential capacity, it's important for passengers to check the specific schedule, halt list, and fare details before booking to ensure it meets their travel needs.
