The Final Standings
India finished fourth in the final medal tally at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow, securing a total of 39 medals. The final haul included 13 gold, 17 silver, and 9 bronze medals. This performance saw India place behind sporting powerhouses Australia,
which topped the table with 171 medals, England with 110, and Canada with 62. Host nation Scotland finished fifth, just behind India, also with 39 total medals but fewer silvers. Given the circumstances of these Games, which were scaled down after a change of host, this fourth-place finish is a significant achievement for the Indian contingent.
A Scaled-Down Games
The Glasgow 2026 Games were markedly different from previous editions. Initially, Victoria, Australia, was set to host but withdrew in July 2023 due to soaring cost projections, which had reportedly ballooned from A$2.6 billion to over A$6 billion. This left the event's future in doubt until Glasgow stepped in to host a 'pared-down' version. To make the Games feasible on a shorter timeline and with a smaller budget, the sporting program was dramatically reduced to just 10 disciplines. This meant the exclusion of several sports where India has traditionally excelled, including wrestling, badminton, table tennis, and shooting, which collectively accounted for 25 of India's 61 medals in 2022.
Boxing and Weightlifting Lead the Charge
With their traditional strengths absent, India's boxers rose to the occasion in spectacular fashion. The boxing squad delivered the country's best performance, clinching an astounding 10 medals. This included an unprecedented seven gold medals, the most won by any single nation in boxing at a Commonwealth Games. Weightlifting also proved to be a pillar of strength for the contingent, contributing eight medals to the national tally. Veteran Mirabai Chanu was a standout performer, securing her third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal, a historic hat-trick for the celebrated weightlifter. These disciplines were crucial in ensuring India maintained a strong position on the leaderboard.
Breakthroughs in Athletics
The streamlined Games also provided a platform for India's track and field stars to shine. The athletics contingent delivered a strong performance, bolstered by a record-breaking campaign from the para-athletics team. Indian para-athletes secured seven medals, matching the country's combined total from all previous editions of the Games. This historic haul included three gold medals and marked the first time in 20 years that an Indian para-athlete had stood on the podium. While javelin superstar Neeraj Chopra was a major medal hope, the overall depth of the athletics squad, including strong showings in jumping and running events, underscored India's growing prowess in the sport.
Looking Ahead to Ahmedabad 2030
Despite the challenges faced in Glasgow, the future of the Commonwealth Games appears to have a strong Indian connection. The successful, albeit scaled-back, execution of the 2026 Games has paved the way for the centenary edition in 2030, which is set to be hosted in Ahmedabad, India. The 2030 Games are expected to return to a larger format, with a program likely expanding to 15-17 sports. For the Indian athletes, the performance in Glasgow under trying circumstances is a testament to their resilience. As attention now turns toward the next Olympic cycle and a home Games in 2030, the contingent will look to build on this success and re-establish its dominance across a full roster of sports.
