A New Travel Manifesto
For today's young Indian traveller, the annual family vacation is a thing of the past. Gen Z prefers shorter, more frequent, and experience-driven trips. They are not just visiting places; they are seeking connections, stories, and a sense of identity.
A recent report highlighted that cultural exploration is a top priority for 56% of Indian Gen Z travellers. This generation values authenticity over extravagance, gravitating towards journeys that feel personal and unique. They are more likely to travel with a partner or solo than in large family groups, prioritising flexibility and self-discovery. This mindset has led them to rediscover one of India’s most iconic assets: the railways, but on their own terms.
Railways: The Unlikely Icon of 'Slow Travel'
In an age of quick flights, the decision to take a train is a conscious choice for 'slow travel'. It’s a move away from rushing through a checklist of destinations and towards savouring the journey itself. The rhythmic motion of the train, the ever-changing landscapes, and conversations with fellow passengers create a holistic experience that flights cannot replicate. Gen Z travellers are drawn to this immersive approach, where the journey offers time for reflection and a deeper connection to the country's vast and varied terrain. Train travel allows them to see India not just as a series of points on a map, but as a continuous, unfolding story, making the trip itself a memorable part of their cultural exploration.
Decoding 'Budget Luxury'
The term 'budget luxury' might seem contradictory, but for Gen Z, it's about smart, value-driven choices. It’s not about the extreme opulence of trains like the Maharajas' Express, which can cost lakhs. Instead, it’s about accessing premium experiences at an affordable price point. The prime example is the growing popularity of Vistadome coaches introduced by Indian Railways. These coaches, attached to regular trains on scenic routes, offer panoramic glass windows, rotating seats, and glass ceilings for an immersive viewing experience. A journey in a Vistadome coach on routes like Mumbai-Goa, Kalka-Shimla, or through the Araku Valley offers a taste of luxury—comfort, breathtaking views, and a unique experience—without the exorbitant price tag of a fully private luxury train.
Connecting Culture, One Station at a Time
These train journeys are rarely just for sightseeing from a window. They are purposeful routes chosen to connect with India’s heritage. A Vistadome journey to Kevadiya is linked to visiting the Statue of Unity, while the historic Kalka-Shimla 'Toy Train' is a ride through a UNESCO World Heritage site itself, offering a glimpse into colonial-era engineering. Similarly, routes passing through Rajasthan or South India are planned around exploring ancient forts, palaces, and temples. The train becomes the thread connecting multiple points of cultural and historical significance. With a renewed interest in spiritual tourism, many young travellers are using the extensive rail network to visit destinations like Varanasi, Ayodhya, and Rishikesh, blending personal discovery with cultural immersion.
