Good News for Indian Travellers
Japan recently announced a significant global hike in its visa fees, the first in nearly 50 years, effective July 1, 2026. For many nationalities, the cost of a single-entry visa jumped fivefold. However, thanks to a bilateral agreement, Indian passport
holders are exempt from this major increase. The core visa fee for Indians applying from India remains unchanged, providing significant relief for those planning a trip. This special arrangement ensures that Japan remains an accessible and attractive destination for tourists from India.
The Core Visa Fee: What You Actually Pay
For Indian nationals, the fundamental visa application fee is ₹500. This fee applies to both single-entry and multiple-entry tourist visas, which simplifies the cost structure significantly. So, whether you're planning a once-in-a-lifetime two-week vacation or expect to travel frequently for business or leisure, the base embassy charge remains the same low price. This fee is paid at the time of application submission.
Don't Forget the VFS Service Charge
While the visa fee itself is low, it's not the only cost. All applications are processed through VFS Global, Japan's official visa application partner in India. VFS levies a mandatory service charge for handling the application, which includes logistics and administrative tasks. This service charge is ₹800 per application, inclusive of all taxes. Therefore, the minimum total amount you should budget for any Japan visa application is ₹1,300 (₹500 visa fee + ₹800 VFS service fee).
The End of the Transit Visa
One important change in the new fee structure is the abolition of the dedicated transit visa category. Previously, travellers could apply for a cheaper, specific visa for short layovers. From July 1, 2026, this option is no longer available. Passengers transiting through Japan who require a visa will now need to apply for a standard temporary visitor visa. This makes it crucial for travellers with layovers in Japan to check the specific entry requirements for their situation well in advance to avoid any issues.
Considering the e-Visa Option
To streamline the process, Japan has introduced an e-visa system for Indian citizens. This allows for an electronic visa to be issued instead of a traditional sticker in your passport. While the application process is still handled through VFS Global, the key advantage is that you do not have to submit your passport for the entire duration of the processing. You simply present it for verification at the VFS centre. The fees for the e-visa might differ and often come as part of a package from travel agents, which may start from around ₹3,899, including their service charges. However, the core government and VFS fees remain the foundation.
Budgeting for Optional Services
Beyond the mandatory fees, VFS Global offers several optional services for added convenience. These can include courier services to have your passport delivered back to your home or office (approximately ₹550), SMS updates on your application status, and premium lounge services. While not necessary, these can be helpful for those who want a more seamless experience. Factoring these into your budget is wise if you plan to use them. Remember to also account for the cost of obtaining necessary documents, such as passport-sized photographs with a white background and printing your application and supporting papers.
