Gourds for Easy Digestion
During the monsoon, the digestive system, or 'agni' as per Ayurveda, tends to weaken due to high humidity. This makes it difficult to process heavy meals. Vegetables like bottle gourd (lauki), bitter gourd (karela), and ridge gourd (turai) are excellent
choices because they are light, easy to digest, and rich in water content. Bitter gourd, in particular, is valued for its ability to boost immunity and maintain gut health. These vegetables grow on vines, keeping them away from the damp soil and reducing the risk of contamination, which is higher during this season. Incorporating them into your diet through simple preparations like soups or lightly spiced curries can help keep your digestive system comfortable and strong.
Jamun, the Monsoon Superfruit
Jamun, or the Indian blackberry, is a quintessential monsoon fruit for good reason. It is a powerhouse of nutrients, including iron, vitamin C, and potent antioxidants called anthocyanins, which give the fruit its deep purple colour. These properties help in boosting immunity, which is crucial for fighting off common seasonal infections like colds and flu. Jamun is also rich in iron, which helps combat the fatigue and low energy levels that many experience during the damp, overcast days of the monsoon. Furthermore, its natural astringent properties aid in digestion and help manage blood sugar levels.
Corn (Bhutta), the Ultimate Comfort Snack
The sight and smell of roasted corn on the cob, or 'bhutta', is a classic monsoon experience in India. Beyond being a beloved comfort food, corn is also a nutritionally smart choice for the season. It is a good source of fibre, which supports healthy digestion at a time when the gut is often sluggish. Corn is also packed with vitamins, including B-complex and Vitamin A, and antioxidants like lutein and zeaxanthin, which help protect the body's cells from damage and support the immune system. Whether roasted on an open flame or boiled, this seasonal delight offers a healthy and filling snack option that provides a comforting warmth on a rainy day.
Turmeric, the Golden Immunity Booster
While used year-round, turmeric's benefits are especially valuable during the monsoon. This golden spice is renowned for its active compound, curcumin, which possesses powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. During the rainy season, when the body is more susceptible to infections, turmeric helps bolster the immune response. Traditional Indian kitchens have long used turmeric in daily cooking, from dals to vegetables, for this very reason. A warm glass of turmeric milk ('haldi doodh') is a popular and effective remedy for soothing sore throats and fighting off colds. For better absorption of curcumin, it is often recommended to pair turmeric with a pinch of black pepper.
Pomegranate for Strength and Recovery
Pomegranate, or 'anar', is another excellent fruit to include in your monsoon diet. It is exceptionally rich in antioxidants—even more so than green tea—which have powerful anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties. This helps in fighting off the pathogens that thrive in the damp monsoon environment. Pomegranates are also known to improve gut health, which is closely linked to a strong immune system. Additionally, the fruit helps in the production of haemoglobin, which can prevent anaemia and keep energy levels stable during a season often associated with lethargy. Its anti-inflammatory qualities can also help reduce joint pain, which some people find is aggravated by the damp weather.
