The Himalayan Queen: Kalka to Shimla
A journey back in time, the Kalka-Shimla Railway is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an engineering marvel. This narrow-gauge 'Toy Train' winds its way through the Himalayan foothills over a 96-kilometre stretch. The five-hour journey is a visual delight,
navigating over 100 tunnels and more than 800 bridges. As the train slowly climbs, it passes through quaint villages, dense pine and oak forests, and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding valleys. The colonial charm of the stations and the slow pace of the journey allow you to soak in the serene mountain landscape, making it clear why this route is a favourite for those seeking the romance of the rails.
The Toy Train to Darjeeling
Another UNESCO World Heritage gem, the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway offers one of India's most iconic journeys. Starting from New Jalpaiguri, the narrow-gauge train ascends to the hill station of Darjeeling, famous for its tea. The route is a spectacle of engineering, most famous for the Batasia Loop, where the track spirals around a picturesque garden, offering a panoramic view of Darjeeling with the majestic Kanchenjunga in the background on clear days. The train chugs through bustling markets and dense forests, getting so close to homes and shops that it feels like part of the local life. This charming ride culminates at Ghum, India's highest railway station.
Coastal Magic on the Konkan Railway
Considered one of India's most stunning routes, especially during the monsoon, the Konkan Railway connects Mumbai to Goa and further south. The track is a modern engineering feat, sandwiched between the Sahyadri Hills and the Arabian Sea. The journey is a non-stop parade of scenery, with the train crossing over 2,000 bridges and passing through 91 tunnels. Passengers are treated to views of lush green paddy fields, dense forests, and countless rivers. During the rains, the landscape becomes a vibrant green paradise, with waterfalls cascading near the tracks. It's a journey that perfectly captures the transition from urban chaos to serene coastal beauty.
Across the Sea to Rameswaram
A truly unique and thrilling experience, the train journey from Mandapam to Pamban Island is one of the most adventurous in India. The highlight is crossing the Pamban Bridge, the country's first sea bridge, which opened in 1914. For about 15 minutes, the train travels over a 2.3-kilometre stretch with the calm, blue waters of the Palk Strait on either side. The feeling of gliding just metres above the sea is both awe-inspiring and surreal. This route connects mainland India to the pilgrimage town of Rameswaram and offers a one-of-a-kind perspective that blends engineering, nature, and spirituality.
Through the Blue Mountains to Ooty
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway, yet another UNESCO World Heritage site, takes you on a fairy-tale journey from Mettupalayam to the hill station of Ooty. Known as the 'Toy Train', it runs on Asia's steepest track, using a unique rack and pinion system to climb the hills. The five-hour journey covers 46 kilometres, passing through 16 tunnels, over 250 bridges, and around 208 curves. The train chugs through the heart of the Nilgiris, or 'Blue Mountains', offering stunning vistas of lush tea plantations, dense shola forests, and mist-covered valleys. The slow ascent allows passengers to fully immerse themselves in the region's rich biodiversity and scenic splendour.
The Desert Odyssey: Jodhpur to Jaisalmer
In stark contrast to the lush greenery of the mountains and coasts, the journey from Jodhpur to Jaisalmer offers the stark, mesmerising beauty of the Thar Desert. Often called the 'Desert Queen' route, this train ride provides a window into the heart of Rajasthan's arid landscape. Instead of forests and waterfalls, the view is of endless golden sand dunes, hardy xerophytic shrubs, and the occasional camel caravan, painting a cinematic picture of desert life. The journey becomes particularly magical during sunrise or sunset, when the light bathes the desert in hues of gold and amber, proving that scenic beauty lies in simplicity as much as in abundance.
