This is particularly crucial when you are feeling genuinely exhausted, sleep-deprived, or on the verge of overtraining. One study found that athletes who engaged in active recovery could perform for longer without reporting fatigue and sustained their power output better than those who opted for passive rest. Engaging in light activity, even between sets at the gym, can be more beneficial than simply sitting still. Furthermore, embracing gentle movement on rest days can provide psychological benefits. A full rest day (passive recovery) is non-negotiable when you are injured, feeling unwell, or experiencing extreme fatigue and symptoms of overtraining. On these days, prioritise sleep, nutrition, and hydration to give your body the complete break it needs. Active recovery is your best bet for the days after a tough but manageable workout when you're dealing with typical muscle soreness (DOMS). Gentle movement can alleviate stiffness and make you feel better faster. It’s also an excellent strategy for a cool-down immediately following your workout to help your body gradually return to a resting state.
