Look Beyond the Big Percentage
A “50% off” sticker is designed to make you click 'buy' instantly, but it doesn't always signal a great deal. Some sellers may inflate the Maximum Retail Price (MRP) just before a sale to make the discount appear larger than it is. A product advertised
at 40% off might actually be selling for its normal price. Before you buy, do a quick search for the product on other reputable websites to compare its standard, non-sale price. If a discount seems too good to be true, especially on a premium product, it warrants extra caution. Legitimate discounts on popular, non-clearance items rarely exceed 40-50%.
The Crucial Expiry Date Check
Beauty products have a shelf life, and using expired items can cause skin irritation or infections. During sales, brands often try to clear out older stock. Every legitimate product sold in India must display a manufacturing date (MFG) and an expiry date (EXP). Check the bottom of the container or the crimp of the tube. Also, look for the 'Period After Opening' (PAO) symbol—an open jar with a number like '6M' or '12M'. This indicates how many months the product is safe to use after you first open it, regardless of the expiry date. If a product is nearing its expiry or has been on the shelf for a long time, the discount may not be worth it.
How to Spot a Counterfeit Product
The festive rush is a prime time for counterfeit products to enter the market, especially online. These fakes can contain harmful ingredients like lead or mercury. To protect yourself, always buy from official brand websites or authorized retailers. Be wary of unverified social media pages or third-party sellers on large marketplaces. Inspect the packaging closely. Fake products often have spelling mistakes, poor-quality printing, flimsy containers, or inconsistent fonts. Compare the product in hand with images on the brand's official website. Also, check for a valid batch number, which should be stamped or embossed, not just printed.
Deconstruct the Value of Bundles
Gift sets and 'buy one, get one' deals are everywhere during the festive season. While they can offer great value, it's important to calculate their true worth. First, add up the individual cost of each full-sized item in the bundle to see if the bundle price offers a genuine saving. Often, bundles include slow-moving products or sample sizes that you may not use. Ask yourself if you truly need every item in the kit. If you're only interested in one or two products, it might be cheaper to buy them individually. Don't forget to factor in the cost of packaging, which is built into the price.
Verify the Seller and Platform
Where you buy from is as important as what you buy. Always prioritise official brand websites and reputable, well-known e-commerce platforms. Before purchasing from a seller for the first time, search for their name online with words like “scam” or “complaint” to check their reputation. Legitimate businesses will have clear contact information, a physical address, and a transparent return policy. Be cautious of ads on social media that lead to unfamiliar websites. Paying by credit card can offer an extra layer of protection, as you can often dispute charges for products that are fake or never arrive.
