Reaching Henry's Island is a straightforward journey of about four to five hours from Kolkata. The most economical option is taking the Namkhana local train from Sealdah station, a ride that takes around three hours. From Namkhana station, you can hire
a toto or an e-rickshaw for the final leg of the journey to the island. Alternatively, several state buses run from Esplanade in Kolkata towards Bakkhali, which is very close to Henry's Island. If you prefer driving, the route takes you through Diamond Harbour and Kakdwip. A bridge over the Hatania-Doania river at Namkhana now allows cars to cross directly, making the road trip smoother and eliminating the need for a ferry.

The key to a budget trip to Henry's Island lies in its government-run accommodations, managed by the West Bengal Fisheries Development Corporation (WBSFDC). The two primary options are the Sundari Tourist Complex and the Mangrove Tourist Complex. These lodges offer basic, clean rooms and a peaceful environment that prioritises nature over luxury. Sundari is particularly noted for its watchtower, which provides panoramic views of the entire island. It's crucial to book these lodges well in advance, especially for weekend trips, as they are popular and have limited availability. Bookings can typically be made online through the WBSFDC or the West Bengal Tourism portal.

Henry's Island is not a typical commercial beach resort; it is primarily a large-scale pisciculture project. This means the vibe is quiet, rustic, and deeply connected to nature. Don't expect bustling markets or beach shacks. Instead, you'll find sprawling fish ponds (bheris), dense mangrove forests, and quiet walking trails. The beaches are known for being serene and are famous for the thousands of tiny red crabs that scuttle across the sand. It's a place to slow down, read a book, and watch fishermen at work. One of the highlights for many visitors is the simple, delicious, and freshly prepared fish and prawn curries served at the lodge canteens.
Exploring the Natural Charm
The activities on Henry's Island revolve around enjoying its tranquil environment. A must-do is climbing the watchtower at the Sundari complex for a breathtaking 360-degree view of the mangroves and the sea.
