A Clear Look at the New Passport Fees
As of July 1, 2026, the Ministry of External Affairs has implemented a new fee structure for passport services. For adult applicants, the cost for a fresh or reissued standard 36-page passport is now ₹2,500, up from the previous ₹1,500. If you are a frequent
traveller and need more pages for visas, a 60-page jumbo passport will now cost ₹3,500, an increase from ₹2,000. These changes apply to both first-time applications and renewals, impacting a wide range of travellers from students to business professionals. The government has, however, maintained a 10% discount on fresh applications for minors up to eight years old and senior citizens above 60.
The Higher Cost of a Quicker Passport
For those in a hurry, the expedited Tatkaal service has also seen a significant price jump. Applying for a 36-page passport under the Tatkaal scheme will now cost ₹5,000, a notable increase from the earlier fee of ₹3,500. Similarly, the Tatkaal fee for a 60-page passport has been revised to ₹6,000 from ₹4,000. This makes last-minute passport applications considerably more expensive, emphasizing the financial benefit of planning ahead. The steeper fees for urgent processing are intended to cover the administrative resources required for expedited services.
Why Have the Fees Increased?
This is the first major revision of passport fees since 2012. According to government notifications, the hike is primarily to align application charges with the rising administrative costs associated with processing, printing, and securing modern passports. These costs include investments in technology, such as the rollout of next-generation e-passports with secure microchips, and the overall modernisation of the Passport Seva system. The aim is to support a more secure and efficient passport issuance system for all citizens.
Navigating the Application Process
The process for applying for a passport remains largely the same, handled through the official Passport Seva portal. You will need to register, fill out the application form online, and select your passport type (e.g., fresh or reissue, normal or Tatkaal). The new fees will be reflected when you make the mandatory online payment to book an appointment at a Passport Seva Kendra (PSK). Remember that for Tatkaal applications, you often pay the normal fee online and the remaining balance in cash at the PSK, once your application is accepted for expedited processing.
Tips for Smart Travel Planning
With these new costs, foresight becomes your best friend. To avoid the hefty Tatkaal charges, start your passport application or renewal process at least two to three months before any planned international travel. Factor the new passport fee into your initial travel budget to avoid surprises. If your passport is lost or damaged, the replacement costs are even higher, so it pays to keep your document safe. A standard 36-page replacement now costs ₹5,000 under normal processing, with the Tatkaal equivalent being ₹7,500. By being proactive and informed, you can manage this new expense without letting it disrupt your travel dreams.
