A Shift in Retail Credit
India's retail credit market is witnessing a significant structural shift. While unsecured forms of credit like personal loans and credit cards are seeing slower growth, secured lending is gaining powerful momentum, and gold is at the heart of this transformation.
According to a report by Experian, the share of gold loans in retail credit sourcing jumped from 18% in FY23 to 41% in FY26, outpacing all other products. This surge is not just a fleeting trend but a reflection of a fundamental change in how Indian households are leveraging their assets to meet immediate financial needs, from medical emergencies and education fees to small business working capital.
The Rise of Specialised Lenders
Much of this growth is fuelled by Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs) that specialize in gold loans. These companies have aggressively expanded their branch networks into semi-urban and rural areas, reaching customers who were previously underserved by traditional banks. Unlike banks, which often have more complex and lengthy processes, gold loan NBFCs have built their entire business model around speed and efficiency. They offer streamlined documentation, quick valuation, and near-instant disbursal, often within hours. As a result, NBFCs have been steadily gaining market share from public sector banks, doubling their share of assets under management in recent years.
Digital Disruption and Doorstep Service
Technology has been a massive catalyst in the gold loan boom. The emergence of digital lending platforms has made the process more convenient and transparent than ever. Borrowers can now initiate applications online, use calculators to estimate their loan eligibility, and in some cases, complete the entire process from home with doorstep valuation and collection services. This fusion of traditional trust in gold with modern fintech convenience has broadened the appeal of these loans, particularly among urban and tech-savvy consumers. This digital push helps in bringing more people into the formal credit system, reducing reliance on informal moneylenders.
Favourable Economics and Regulations
For the borrower, the math is compelling. Gold loans typically offer significantly lower interest rates compared to unsecured personal loans—a difference that can be as much as 3-6 percentage points. This makes them a more affordable option for short-term credit. Furthermore, with no dependency on credit scores or extensive income proof, they are accessible to a much wider segment of the population. Recent regulatory changes by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) have also provided a boost. A tiered Loan-to-Value (LTV) framework, effective from April 2026, allows borrowers to get up to 85% of their gold's value for smaller loan amounts, putting more cash in their hands when they need it most.
Formalising the Unorganised Sector
Perhaps one of the most significant impacts of the organised gold loan market's growth is the formalisation of credit. For centuries, local moneylenders dominated this space, often with opaque terms and high interest rates. While the unorganised sector still holds a large share, RBI-regulated banks and NBFCs are steadily encouraging a shift. They offer standardised valuation, transparent pricing, and better consumer protection. This migration from informal to formal channels is a crucial step towards greater financial inclusion, providing borrowers with safer and more reliable credit options.
