Secure Your Peace of Mind
Luggage safety is a primary concern on any journey. For train travel in India, a sturdy chain and padlock are non-negotiable. Most sleeper berths have hooks or rails underneath where you can secure your main suitcase or backpack, preventing anyone from
grabbing it at a busy station stop. While a simple lock deters opportunistic theft, a chain provides a much stronger layer of security. For your valuables—wallet, phone, documents, and electronics—use a small daypack or sling bag. Keep this smaller bag with you at all times, especially when you sleep. You can place it near your head or use it as a pillow to ensure it's always within reach.
Create a Comfortable Cocoon
Turning your berth into a cosy space is key for a restful night. While AC coaches can get surprisingly chilly, sleeper class temperatures can fluctuate. The solution is to dress in comfortable, breathable layers. Think soft cotton clothes, track pants, and a light jacket or shawl you can easily add or remove. Although some upper-class trains provide bedding, it's often a good idea to bring your own lightweight sheet or blanket. This adds a layer of hygiene and familiar comfort. An inflatable neck pillow, an eye mask, and a pair of earplugs are small items that make a huge difference, helping you block out light and noise from fellow passengers.
Stay Fresh and Hygienic
Long hours on a train can leave you feeling less than fresh. A well-stocked toiletry kit is your best friend. Pack travel-sized essentials like a toothbrush, toothpaste, and deodorant. Wet wipes and hand sanitiser are invaluable for quick clean-ups and maintaining hygiene, especially before eating or after using the washroom. A small bottle of dry shampoo can also help you feel refreshed. Don't forget to pack your own toilet paper or tissues, as they are not always available on board. For footwear, slip-on shoes or flip-flops are ideal for walking around the carriage or for trips to the bathroom.
Snack Smart and Stay Hydrated
While train journeys offer a chance to sample station-side delicacies, it's wise to come prepared. Pack non-perishable snacks like nuts, biscuits, dry fruits, and energy bars to keep hunger at bay between stops. Bringing your own food ensures you have options you enjoy, even if the train's pantry service isn't to your liking. Staying hydrated is crucial, so carry a reusable water bottle that you can refill at stations. While you can buy bottled water on the train, having your own supply is both convenient and more environmentally friendly. Sealed bottles are generally the safest option when purchasing water onboard.
Keep Charged and Entertained
Train journeys are a great opportunity to disconnect, but you'll still want your devices powered up. Charging sockets on trains can be in high demand or unreliable. A fully charged power bank is an absolute essential to keep your phone, e-reader, and other gadgets running. For entertainment, download movies, podcasts, or music to your device before you leave home, as on-train Wi-Fi is often unstable. A good pair of headphones is a must-have, not just for your enjoyment but also as a courtesy to other passengers. And for those who prefer old-school entertainment, a good book or magazine is the perfect travel companion.
