Getting to the beautiful beaches and towns of the Konkan has traditionally involved a few hurdles. Driving down the Mumbai-Goa highway can be a time-consuming affair, especially during peak season and monsoons. For train travellers, particularly those
in Mumbai's suburbs, the journey often required a preliminary trip into the city to major terminals like Dadar or Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) to catch a Konkan-bound train, adding extra time and crowding to the itinerary. Many existing services are also heavily booked during holidays and festivals, making spontaneous trips difficult.
Introducing the CSMT-Sawantwadi Road Express
In a significant upgrade for regional connectivity, Indian Railways has launched a new daily express train directly linking Mumbai with Sawantwadi Road in the southern Konkan. This service, operating as train number 15087 from CSMT and 15088 on its return, is designed to provide a much-needed direct link, addressing a long-standing demand from passengers. The train covers the 510-kilometre route, aiming to make the journey more reliable and comfortable for thousands of travellers.
Key Stops and Enhanced Connectivity
One of the major advantages of this new service is its extensive list of stops, which enhances connectivity across the entire Konkan belt. The train will halt at 22 stations, including major hubs like Dadar, Thane, and Panvel, before proceeding to key Konkan destinations. Important stops along the route include Roha, Mangaon, Khed, Chiplun, Ratnagiri, Kankavli, and Kudal. This makes it a highly practical option for travellers heading to various parts of the Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts, which were previously harder to reach directly.

This new train is a boon for a wide range of passengers. Tourists will find it easier to access popular destinations like the beaches of Tarkarli and Amboli. For residents of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, especially those in Thane and Panvel, it offers a direct boarding option without the need to travel to CSMT. The service is also expected to ease pressure on other Konkan-bound trains and provide a reliable option for daily commuters, students, and traders who frequently travel between Mumbai and the Konkan region.
Timetable and Journey Details
The service is designed as an overnight connection from Mumbai. Train No. 15087 is scheduled to depart from CSMT at 11:55 PM daily, arriving at Sawantwadi Road at 2:15 PM the next day. The return journey, Train No. 15088, will leave Sawantwadi Road at 5:00 PM and reach CSMT at 6:40 AM the following morning, making it convenient for those needing to get back to the city for work. The train consists of a mix of sleeper and air-conditioned coaches, catering to different budgets and comfort levels.
