Global Capability Centers (GCCs) are offshore units set up by multinational corporations in talent-rich countries like India. They are not third-party outsourcing firms; they are fully-owned extensions of the parent company, handling critical work. Initially
focused on cost-saving back-office tasks, today's GCCs in India are innovation hubs that drive product engineering, AI development, data analytics, and global strategy. With nearly 16 new GCCs opening every month in the first half of 2026, the demand for skilled engineers has never been higher.
1. Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning
AI and ML are no longer niche skills; they are central to the work done in modern GCCs. Companies are desperate for engineers who can build and adapt large language models (LLMs), develop AI-powered automation, and create predictive analytics systems. Demand for GenAI specialists, in particular, has surged dramatically, but there is a significant talent shortage. For a fresh engineer, developing skills in frameworks like TensorFlow or PyTorch and understanding how to apply them to business problems is a direct route to a high-demand role.
2. Cloud Computing and DevOps
Cloud proficiency is a non-negotiable skill. GCCs operate on a global scale, and cloud platforms like Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud are their backbone. Engineers with expertise in cloud-native architecture, containerisation tools like Kubernetes, and serverless computing are highly sought after. This is often paired with DevOps skills, as GCCs value the ability to create and manage CI/CD pipelines to ensure fast and reliable software delivery across the globe.
3. Data Engineering and Analytics
GCCs function as data powerhouses for their parent organisations, processing vast amounts of information to guide global decisions. This has created a massive need for data engineers who can build and manage data pipelines using tools like SQL, Python, and Spark. As data becomes more central, roles like Data Mesh Architects, who design decentralised data ownership models, are also emerging. The ability to not just process data but also help the business derive insights from it is a critical differentiator.

As multinational companies entrust their Indian GCCs with sensitive global data and product development, the need for robust security is paramount. This has led to a hiring surge for cybersecurity specialists. The most in-demand skills include cloud security, application security (DevSecOps), and threat detection. With a global shortage of cybersecurity professionals, engineers who specialize in protecting digital assets have a clear and stable career path within the GCC ecosystem.

Technical skills alone are not enough. Engineers in GCCs work daily with teams spread across different continents, cultures, and time zones. The ability to communicate complex technical ideas clearly to non-technical stakeholders or colleagues from a different cultural background is essential.
