Master Your Passenger List
The single biggest time-waster during a booking rush is manually typing passenger details. The 'Master List' feature is IRCTC's solution to this problem. It allows you to pre-save the details of all frequent travellers—yourself, family members, or friends—directly
into your IRCTC account. You can save details like name, age, gender, berth preference, and even ID card information. This one-time setup means that when you're booking a ticket, especially during the high-pressure Tatkal window, you can add passengers with a single click instead of typing everything out. To set this up, log in to the IRCTC website or the Rail Connect app, navigate to 'My Profile' or 'My Account', and select the 'Master List' option. From there, you can add each passenger one by one. Taking 10 minutes to do this before your travel planning can save you critical seconds when every moment counts.
Streamline Your Checkout with Faster Payments
After a successful seat selection, the payment page is the next major hurdle where bookings often fail. Fumbling for card details, waiting for OTPs, or dealing with a slow payment gateway can cost you the ticket. IRCTC offers several ways to speed this up. The IRCTC e-Wallet is a dedicated prepaid wallet where you can deposit money in advance. This allows you to pay with a single click, bypassing the entire bank gateway process which saves precious time. Alternatively, using UPI is also considered one of the fastest methods as it requires minimal steps for authentication. Many users prepare by having their UPI app open or using the IRCTC e-Wallet to ensure the transaction is completed in the shortest possible time, avoiding the dreaded 'transaction timed out' error. It is advisable to have your chosen payment method ready before the booking opens.
Use 'Book Now, Pay Later' to Secure a Seat Instantly
For situations where you need to book instantly without worrying about immediate payment, IRCTC has a 'Book Now, Pay Later' option. Partnering with services like ePayLater, this feature allows you to finalize your booking and receive a ticket without paying at that moment. The payment can be made within a 14-day window. This is incredibly useful during the Tatkal rush because it completely eliminates the payment gateway step from the booking process itself, which is often the slowest part. By selecting this option at checkout, your ticket is confirmed immediately, and you can handle the payment later. This feature is available for both general and Tatkal bookings. However, users should be aware that this service comes with a small service charge and late payment fees if the amount isn't settled within the stipulated time.
A Revamped, Clutter-Free Interface
As part of recent upgrades reportedly rolled out around July 15, 2026, IRCTC has aimed to create a faster and more intuitive user experience. The updated website and app feature a cleaner interface, which is designed to reduce distractions like unnecessary pop-ups and CAPTCHA verifications that historically slowed down the booking process. One significant improvement is the ability to see seat availability across all classes on a single page, so you no longer have to click into each class individually to check for seats. This, combined with an increased capacity to handle more bookings and enquiries per minute, is intended to make the platform more stable during peak hours. While individual results may vary, a more responsive system means users spend less time waiting for pages to load and more time completing their booking.
