Major Festivals: Ganesh Chaturthi and Janmashtami
September 2026 kicks off with a holiday for Janmashtami on Friday, September 4. Banks will be closed in a multitude of states including Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, West Bengal, and many more. Later in the month, Ganesh Chaturthi, one of the most
prominent festivals, will be celebrated on Monday, September 14. This will lead to bank closures in states like Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Telangana, Goa, and Andhra Pradesh. In some areas like Ahmedabad and Panaji, banks may also be closed the following day, September 15, for related observances. Given the scale of these festivals, it's wise to complete any urgent bank-related tasks beforehand.
Regional Holidays Across the Country
Beyond the major festivals, a variety of regional holidays will see banks close their doors in specific states. On September 21, banks in Assam and Kerala will be shut for Janmotsav of Srimanta Sankardeva and Sree Narayana Guru Samadhi Day, respectively. The following day, September 22, is a holiday in Jharkhand for Karma Puja. Banks in Jammu and Kashmir will be closed on September 23 for the birthday of Maharaja Hari Singh Ji. Further east, Sikkim will observe a holiday on September 25 for Indrajatra. In Assam, September 12 marks a holiday for the Tirubhav Tithi of Srimanta Sankardeva.
Don’t Forget The Standard Weekend Closures
As always, banks across the country will remain closed on all Sundays throughout September (September 6, 13, 20, 27). In addition to this, they will be non-operational on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month. In September 2026, these dates fall on September 12 and September 26. It's important to factor these fixed closures into your schedule, as they apply to all public and private sector banks nationwide. A regional holiday falling close to a weekend can result in banks being closed for three or even four consecutive days, making advance planning even more critical.
Your Digital Banking Lifeline
Even when physical bank branches are closed, your financial life doesn't have to come to a standstill. Digital banking services are your best friend during holiday seasons. Mobile banking apps, internet banking portals, and UPI services will remain fully functional for fund transfers, bill payments, and checking your account balance. ATMs are also expected to be operational for cash withdrawals, though it's always a good idea to withdraw any necessary cash in advance, especially during a long series of holidays, to avoid potential shortages at high-traffic machines. Using these digital tools can help you manage most of your routine banking needs without having to visit a branch.
