Both the single-session group and the three-session group saw significant reductions in body fat mass and waist circumference compared to the non-exercising control group. Specifically, the weekend warriors lost an average of 0.8 kilograms of fat mass, while the group exercising three times a week lost around 1 kilogram. Statistically, this difference was not considered significant, leading to a powerful conclusion: for the goal of reducing body fat, getting your total weekly exercise volume in seems to be the most important factor. This finding challenges the rigid notion that you must hit the gym multiple times a week to see meaningful fat loss results.
The Cardio Caveat: A Case for Consistency

While fat loss results were similar, there was one area where spreading out the workouts proved superior: cardiorespiratory fitness. Participants who exercised three times per week experienced greater improvements in their heart and lung health than those who did all their exercise in one go. This makes intuitive sense. Challenging your cardiovascular system more frequently provides more regular stimulus for adaptation. So, if your primary goal is to improve your endurance, run a faster 5k, or generally boost your heart health, breaking up your workouts into more frequent, shorter sessions appears to be the more effective strategy.
